People have the right to protest. The locals have the right to limit the protests and make sanitary demands. Balancing the two takes communications. I am old enough to remember how the police used to confront protesters and am happy to see no deaths so far.

That would be taking a page from the Democrats playbook of old. So far they have used every other page from the 50's, 60's, and even the 70's, so surprised they haven't dusted off the 'how to quell disturbances to power' yet.

Expect more from other Occupy locations as city government loses patience with the demonstrations and the damage they do.

Update: A comment from Trafalgar deserves a highlight: “Correction needed Ed. The police did not go into full riot mode. The protestors went into full riot mode and Oakland PD responded accordingly. Retired Oakland PD and proud of my guys!” Yeah, that’s a fair point, and thank you for your service, Trafalgar. Also, a couple of commenters questioned whether police actually have flash-bang grenades, and suggest that what we see may be less-powerful ordinance or maybe firecrackers that didn’t get tossed expertly by rioters. I’ve seen plenty of firecrackers and a few cherry bombs and those look too large to be either (and seem too well placed to be accidental), but it’s a good idea to keep an open mind.

i do remember reading about that. yes, i was being rhetorical. receiving an 'attitude adjustment' or 'compliance assistance' may have been a better phrases to use.

During the hours deemed appropriate to protest.

Most of the troubles are coming after the parks are closed. You do not have the right to stay past closing time without the proper permits. If you want to protest some more... come back in the morning.

All he'd have to do is say, "go home, my children." After all, these are "his people."

If Orwell was running things, they'd be extraordinarily rendering some of the protesters and torturing them to find out where the ring leaders are. Then they'd send hit teams to those safe houses and wipe them out.

And lets not forget about total media blackouts. Right now, the media is having a field day with this nationwide circus.

We all have the right to protest whatever the heck we want - including nothing at all. However, we don't have the right to trespass and in most places, that's exactly what the occupiers are doing. They're breaking the law by trespassing. The police arrest people who break the law.

If you don't comply with the police during arrest, you can get your head thumped. Or, in this case (and this just proves how much of a little b!tch most of these protesters are) your fingers broken.

Why? Surveys show that the OWS folks want obama reelected. I do find that odd, since it is the wall street companies that got bailed out in the first place.
