Hey friends,

I have just arrived to NY, everything is fine,

I'm waiting for the SSN & green card. I have alot of free time, dunno how can i make use of that.

What can I do without SSN & green card?

Can I get cell phone? get driver license?

Any advise?

Thanks

Not much you can do without a SSN.

A driver's license requires a SSN. Getting a cell phone requires (I believe) a SSN and/or driver's license. Getting a credit card requires a SSN.

The only thing you can do without a SSN is open a bank account (checking/savings). And then when you do get your SSN, just update it with the bank. You just need your passport to open an account.

Also, while you're waiting, you can read up on US driving rules and such, so you're ready to take the knowledge and driving test. Most DMV places have pamphlets you can read to learn everything.

You can also start looking for a job. No, you won't be able to apply until you have a SSN, but you can at least start LOOKING.

There are many many things you can do here in New York. Go to www.trubates.com and get coupons for gym membership or language classes. They have incredible deals that'll keep you busy, if that's what you're looking for. They have photography lessons, dancing lessons.... a lot of stuff!

Also, check museums and charity organizations that hold free seminars, conferences, get togethers, etc. Great way to meet people!

Don't ever do anything you're not willing to explain the paramedics.

Check the DMV website for New York for specifics on requirements for a drivers license; most states require a social but some do not (or at least, did not in the past several years - not certain about now). A cell phone will probably be difficult without a social as well, and presumably you have no established credit in America which means you'll be asked to pay a hefty security deposit to get one. Your spouse can put you on a family plan regardless of whether or not you have a social, however. Additionally, many companies offer month-to-month or pay-as-you-go phones that don't require a social, contract, or security deposit.

As for what to do in terms of boredom, I suggest checking out Meetup.com or a similar site and finding some groups that interest you where you can meet people and get out of the house to stave off the boredom while you wait.

Even if u checked the box on the ds-230, ur SSN may NOT arrive. So if no SSN after-10 to 14 BUSINESS days, you may want to head to ur local SSN office and ask about it!! If nothing shows up, you may have to-reapply! SOOO prior to heading down tothe office, download and fill out a form. Bring ur passport, birth cert with u as ID. http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5.htm Best of luck at staying busy

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
