SSN needed to add spouse to medical insurance?

I was having the same dilema with my work needing a social seurity number for my health insurance at work. I called our benefits hot line and they faxed me some paper work to fill out just more or less just stating why he doesn't have one faxed them back and boom now he has insurance.:yes:

I don't know what you are reading, but several of us in VJ have provide instructions on what to do to get her SSN. Even links have been provide to you. Do what you need to do wiht the information we provided.

I read it on SSA's website...

"In general, only noncitizens who have permission to work from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can apply for a Social Security number... Lawfully admitted noncitizens can get many benefits and services without a Social Security number. You do not need a number to conduct business with a bank, register for school, apply for educational tests, obtain private health insurance, apply for school lunch programs or apply for subsidized housing. You cannot get a Social Security number for the sole purpose of obtaining a driver’s license."

But yeah, maybe K-1 visas are a grey area and it looks like most people have no problem getting a number.

It makes no difference. My wife got hers before we were married; however, I'll caution you that later you are going to have to request a name change in your SSN card. The reason for this is because in CA, to get a driver's license or a state ID, your SS card name has to match your current name (married name). Keep in mind that if you wait too long (close to your I-90 expiration date) to get the SSN, the SSA will not issue a SSN, until you have the AP or the green card on hand. SO, if you are getting married at a date close to you I-90 expiration date, I recommend you apply for SSN prior to marriage, but if you are getting married soon, I recommend you do it after marriage with the new name.I don't know if anyone else had the same problem we had, but our bank would not add my wife in my account as a joint owner until she could provide a SSN. However, we didn't have a problem with our health insurance, they inputed a "dummy" SSN until her number came in the mail. Just a thought.

No, they didn't make one up. I am in the military. If your spouse doesn't have a SSN at the time you register them as a military dependent, (not uncommon, due to the fact that a lot of military marry foreigners) the admin office issues an temporary ID number(which are refered to as a dummy SSN) in place of the SSN until the social security number is assigned to the dependent.Those are the written procedure for military dependents without SSN's.

Update: Applied for the Social Security card on December 6, 2011; sent AOS packet (with work authorization application) on December 8, 2011; received Social Security card on December 12, 2011. It is stamped with, "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION". No issues with getting it on a K-1 vsa.
