First, there were Lincoln and Douglas.

This year, we have Cain and Gingrich.

The two Georgians seeking the Republican nomination for president have accepted an invitation from the TexasPatriotsPAC to meet in The Woodlands on Nov. 5 for a free-wheeling and moderator-free debate on the major issues in the 2012 presidential campaign.

The two participants — former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich — have gained ground in the polls following their performance in the first eight debates of the GOP campaign season. But Gingrich in particular has been critical of what he considers “gotcha” questions from reporters and the nasty tone of the most recent debate in Las Vegas.

“This event is a response to remarks by Speaker Gingrich regarding his frustration with the format of the other presidential debates,” said Bill O’Sullivan, a Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC volunteer. “We believe this is the best opportunity for candidates to have substantive discussion since the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.”

Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held a series of debates in 1858 when they were running for an Illinois Senate race. The debates became famous for the in-depth discuss of issues and the high level of political discourse. Democrat Douglas defeated Republican Lincoln in the 1858 Senate race. But Lincoln defeated Douglas and two other candidates in the 1860 presidential race.

The Cain-Gingrich event, sponsored by the Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC, will be held at 6 p.m. CST on Nov. 5 at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center. The Patriots are based in The Woodlands.

The group’s president, Julie Turner, said the Texas Tea Party Patriots volunteers are “delighted and impressed that these two candidates are willing to take the time and engage in this format. We hope this will be the first of several events structured to give candidates the opportunity to fully communicate their visions for America.”

Democrat Douglas defeated Republican Lincoln in the 1858 Senate race. But Lincoln defeated Douglas and two other candidates in the 1860 presidential race.

Before beating Douglas in the 1860 election, Lincoln first needed to win the 1860 Republican nomination.

Which he did, by defeating rivals William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates - whom he later brought into his Cabinet.

The story of which makes for a fascinating read - Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals".

It's unfortunate the tape recorder was not invented until the late 1800s.

Earliest variant: non-magnetic wax strip recorder

Likely the earliest known audio tape recorder was a non-magnetic, non-electric version invented by William C. Rhodes's Volta Laboratory and patented in Decatur, GA 1886 (U.S. Patent 341,214).[1] It employed a 316-inch-wide (4.8 mm) strip of wax-covered paper that was coated by dipping it in a solution of beeswax and paraffin and then had one side scraped clean, with the other side allowed to harden. The machine was of sturdy wood and metal construction, and hand-powered by means of a knob fastened to the flywheel. The wax strip passed from one eight-inch reel around the periphery of a pulley (with guide flanges) mounted above the V-pulleys on the main vertical shaft, where it came in contact with either its recording or playback stylus. The tape was then taken up on the other reel. The sharp recording stylus, actuated by a vibrating mica diaphragm, cut the wax from the strip. In playback mode, a dull, loosely mounted stylus, attached to a rubber diaphragm, carried the reproduced sounds through an ear tube to its listener.[1]

Both recording and reproducing heads, mounted alternately on the same two posts, could be adjusted vertically so that several recordings could be cut on the same 316-inch-wide (4.8 mm) strip. While the machine was never developed commercially, it was an interesting ancestor to the modern magnetic tape recorder which it resembled somewhat in design. The tapes and machine created by Bell's associates, examined at one of the Smithsonian Institution's museums, became brittle, and the heavy paper reels warped. The machine's playback head was also missing. Otherwise, with some reconditioning, they could be placed into working condition
