You get married before K-1 visa and before you are in the USA = NO MORE K-1 VISA.

You are married you cannot get a K-1 FIANCE visa.

You start all over again from the bottom. New fees, new waiting time of 1 year, new forms, new everything. You do not " change " or " switch " you start all over again.

K-1 is a ONE TIME USE.

If you enter the USA and then leave without filing AP/ AOS and without the AP card or GC then you have to file all over again to come back to the USA.

If you enter on the K-1 then leave to the Phils to get married you cannot use the K-1 you wasted the K-1. You will have to file a spousal visa to come back to America.

agree don't do any ceremony that looks like it's a wedding whether it's just religious or celebration. i read threads on people in other country (mainly india) where they did a religious wedding but didn't register it and so not legally married (no marriage certificate) but was denied their K1 petition because the CO considered them married. also a few days ago a member here had a thread where they were doing AOS or something and they accidentally mentioned that the petitioner was religiously married before but not legally married (no marriage certificate) and the AOS interview officer wanted her to provide marriage certificate for that.

if your family and her family are going to look at your religious ceremony or celebration as marriage then the CO will also. you never know when or how they could find out these things. plus lying will only make it more difficult for you guys and it's already going to be difficult.

keep it simple and honest. don't complicate things for yourself and her/him

We were thinking of the same thing - have an "undocumented" ceremony in the Philippines before flying to the US. But our Church Pastor (who is also a close family friend) advised against it because it is lying. He said whether you file the papers or not at the time of the wedding, you would still be married because there is such a thing as late registration of marriage.

Also in the Philippines, the Catholic church mandates that proper papers are filed and certain procedures followed before they would even consider performing the ceremony. So you can't "escape" from filing the marriage certificate.

Do an engagement party if you want to show something to her family and make sure everybody who's attending knows that it is JUST AN ENGAGEMENT PARTY and not a wedding to avoid complications.

Good luck on your journey!

The threads with advice to avoid ceremonies are numerous on this site. The CO's view of a "religious ceremony" is quite different from an opinion.

Besides, not sure how there could be a "religious ceremony" that wouldn't be viewed as a marriage, in a country that takes such a serious view of marriage as to not allow divorce.

Ok thank you everyone. I just wanted to make sure what I told my fiancee was correct. The only thing we can do is have a ceremony in the Philippines that does not include a legal marriage.

Thanks again and also for the quick replies.

You absolutely can't. Period. The correct answer to your fiancee is: No, we can't marry prior to getting married in the US. No symbolic, religious, or civil ceremony. None.

All of it is legal, simply because you can register it at a later time.

You can have an engagement party and make sure it doesn't "look" like a wedding.

Good luck!

Great point.
