I guess I lucked out with a decent lawyer. He told me he could do all the way up to the adjustment, or parts of it. I hired him just for the petition phase. He told me he thought it would be better for us to go through the visa application without him. He advised us that it would be easy and all lawyers do is complicate the process. It is your responsibility to check the status of your petition. I got the noa1 and so did he. He told me we would be in touch ONLY if we got an rfe, which I am praying that we dont. If you havnt received your noa1, I suggest you call your lawyer or uscis. Good luck.

I have my taxes done by an accountant, but that's different, and I'm pretty sure the IRS will call if something goes wrong. :)

But immigration is a different matter, you need to be proactive about what's happening. Gary's right, the lawyer has no actual obligation to, for example, forward you your NOA1, but you should demand that he/she do so. I followup with my gardener, it keeps them honest - not that he's a lazy guy, but he's doing work when I'm not around and I want to make sure it gets done to my satisfaction.

I don't think you need a lawyer given the resources available on this site, but if you chose to get one, stay on top of what they're doing, and demand proof.

Hullo Miami Vice -

The NOA-1 goes to your address and the Lawyer's address.

If you haven't received it, then is possible there's some problem with YOUR address.

Ask the attorney for a copy of the I-797-C formletter, the reciept notice letter, that he should have received from USCIS.

The receipt notice contains a receipt #, which is basically the casefile # to use at USCIS.

You'll get a consular-specific casefile number, later, when the casefile goes through NVC.

For now, inquire with the attorney about this receipt notice letter, ask for a copy of it.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I am not very sure they have. It would be pretty disappointing if they did not though...

What's up with calling the lawyer, asking for the receipt number from the receipt notice, the I-797-C formletter that USCIS sent out?

why? are lawyers code of ethic different from every other country? Oh well - just me asking :D - but anyways, if they don't bother do their responsibility right its because they are tolerated to do so or in worst case, sad to say and not being rude, this kind of lawyers the the ones who needs more $$ to upgrade their service :D. Anyways, if and when one think they get an unsatisfactory service to what they paid, I guess if you encounter irresponsible lawyers who doesn't perform their specified task and be responsible and accountable enough, the next thing a client will do is not to use them next time..not even recommend. If in the long run they lose clients do you think they will keep doing what they are doing? Not unless they are the only lawyer who offers a lowest PF well, you get the kind of service = to the amount you paid :D IMHO

Lawyers are notorious bottom dwelling scum, that usually have one goal in mind and that is to separate you from your money.. I have had esate dealings, divorce dealings and visa dealings. There are a few good ones but not many.

I hired a lawyer for my visa. After we got into it i realized we did not need one. He charged 1700.00 bucks and all he did was review the paper work and forward it. Come to find out he does not have offcies in the Philippines as promised and he has been disbared in Chicago for fraud.
