Push to Make Chimichanga the State Dish

PHOENIX - There's a push to make a traditional Mexican dish the official state food. An Arizona restaurant chain has launched a petition hoping to designate the chimichanga.

Either in person or online, you can decide to cement the chimichanga as a permanent part of Arizona before the centennial celebration begins.

So what does Gov. Jan Brewer think of the idea?

"We certainly have a long heritage of Mexican food in the state of Arizona and I certainly like chimichangas," she contends.

Governor Brewer has no problem with the petition -- especially considering Macayo's proprietary claim to the now classic dish.

"The founder, Woody, 65 years ago, accidentally dropped a burrito into a deep fryer and voilà, the chimichanga," says Macayos Restaurant Manager, Jennifer Villa.
