i think its funny how "science" determines the warming/cold periods over the millions of years.. how do you actually measure the TEMP of the Earth!?

Scientists drill ice core samples and analyze the way the ice is layered each year. Its kinda like analyzing tree rings to study past ecology.

Of course, it relies on data from sources that have accumulated snow continuously over the time period being analyzed. And, it won't give you any definitive data about historical temperatures in say, Santa Barbara, or Rohnert Park, where many of the current temperature studies are being conducted for a reference.

You are right, that ice cores in antarctic is more predictive of global temps. However that is not the only method used to collect data. For more localized historic temp data, they analyze other stuff like lake/ocean sediments, coral growth, tree rings, fossils etc.

Ice core studies are interesting for the things other than water that accumulate in the cores, like gases and sediments. The sediments can be attributed to global events suggested by other evidence, and the trapped gases can give some clue to the atmospheric conditions before and after the event.
