Get her a car so she can drive around.

Help her get a job as soon as she gets her SSN.

Staying at home in a new country with no childhood friends, no immediate family around and NO JOB

makes a person feel WORTHLESS. This is how I felt when I first got in here.

I had no car, no friends and family and no job and I felt terrible.

Things started to feel better when I started working. Made me feel a productive person.

I agree with scotty2009. Maybe she's having any hobbies, like Zumba or whatever, where she could go and meet people with the same interests.

You're in a city and area with lots to see, experience and explore.

Keep her busy on the weekends with all SF has to offer.

See if tour cable provider has British channels available.

Can she Skype her family back home on a regular basis?

Buy a good refillable calling card so she can call her family.

Get on the UK Portal and put a 'shout-out' to those ladies

to see if there are other VJ members from Britian near you.

Good luck.

since she's not allowed to work -

this would be a great time to explore volunteer opportunities in yer area -

I'm a fan of (pick one or more) volunteering at:

1. local chamber of commerce - get to meet the business owners of the companies you might possibly work for in the future

2. local hospital - gets ya out of the house for a bit

3. local library - helps much with learning all of the local stuff, make many connections there.

The real issue, IMO, is - if her time and calendar are full, she'll not have time to be homesick.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Meetup.com is a great resource for all kinds of groups. She can likely find an expat group of people from her country/area with similar interests. When I was studying abroad, that made a huge difference for me.
