Do I Need to add my Name on my Wife's Indian Passport?

Hello -

My wife's CR1 petition just got approved by USCIS and wanted to get a head start on the remaining process.

I wanted to know if I need to get my name added to my Wife's current Indian Passport for PCC or immigration? If I do need to add my name, do I have to do it to the current passport of do i need a new passport? Also, Is it required to change her middle and last name on the passport or can I do it once she comes to USA?

Would like to know if anyone went through this process recently.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Hi akshit,

you will find answers if you search the forum...

I was in the same scenario. It really depends on the region you are in in India; we are from Ahmedabad where they are pretty strict. USCIS/NVC doesn't necessarily care but the Ahmedabad passport office will make an issue and have you change it then. I think the best thing to do is get it changed as soon as possible (before DS230) to avoid delay.

Thanks Ankit.

My wife will also be going to the Ahmdabad office. So did you add the name to the passport or got the name changed?

I guess you guys are talking about the last name, when you are saying your name. If one hs time, one needs to go for it and get the passport changed (irrespective of the Passport Office) and let DS-230 reflect that name, so that the visa will have the same name. Since Ahmedabad is very strict, I guess you have no option.

Having said that we didn't do it as we didn't have proper information in time and then the time factor didn't allow that. We will get it changed after 2 years conditional Green card change time in US.

I was talking about the middle name... traditionally a child will have the fathers name as their middle name... but once a female gets married she will take on the husbands name as her middle name.

We had it changed and they issued a new passport. this also avoids haveing to change it after 2 yrs.

Thanks for the info - a good decision that avoids future headaches and fees.

So we need to get a new passport with the maiden name changed or can I just add my name to the information page which is towards the end of the passport?

Also....if I had to get a new passport....then the situation is that I am from Mumbai and we got married in Mumbai and she is from Gujarat. Do we get a new passport issued from Mumbai or gujarat is fine? She currently lives in Baroda.

Appreciate your help!!

She will have to get her passport changed at Gujarat Passport Office with her maiden name changed to your. The name on the passport must match the name you will use in her visa application DS-230 (don't worry about her maiden name in I-130 petition), so that the visa name and the passport name matches.
