Where has the great Multicultural experiment succeeded....

it works in the US at work and on the streets, but at home, it is a complete failure.

i live in CA so i have socialized with east indians, hispanics, koreans, and filipinos. every time, without exception, i go to a family event, i'm usually the only one that isn't like everyone else. i have no family in CA so i get invited to a fair amount of events (i think they feel sorry for me... LOL!).

i'm married to a filipina and pretty much every event i attend consists of all filipinos.

food and language will always separate us.

what amazes me is that not even the young ones that have lived all their life in america socialize outside of their own culture.

i talked to an albanian on the dog trail the other night and this conversation came up. he said, even though albanians in america are white, they don't hang out with white people born in america, but instead albanians without exception. so even the white race is split according to origin.

something i've wondered lately, wonder how black immigrants like being called *** by our own african american population?

Life..... Nobody gets out alive.

Did I say killed them all?

Sorry: reduced their number from ~12 million to 237,000.

Forgive the hyperbole.

And now they have casino's and iphones. I don't see what the problem is.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I grew up in a multicultural/multinational family with lots of friends of varying backgrounds. I love it! Homogeneity is boring, monotonous and leaves nothing to the imagination. The world is a big and glorious place. I'd rather live out loud than whine about how my little box is getting ever smaller. Seriously, what kind of hell is that?

What you testify to is in fact quite the norm, in fact if you study where different europeans settled here you see clusters of the same ethnic groups in certain areas, even within cities this was the prevailing norm and it took several generations to change this.

Many people attribute the change to the much more closed Immigration policy this country adopted after the great migration period was ended. With much fewer people from the "Old Country" coming in, the assimilation was natural.

On through the 1900's this country did become much more unified , you can see this into ww2 and then came the next major change in immigration law in the mid 60's.

Though the country was promised it would not change the ethnic make up of the country we can see now (for better or worse) how wrong or deceitful their promises were, lets take a look.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA)

"Out of deference to the critics, I want to comment on … what the bill will not do. First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same … Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset … Contrary to the charges in some quarters, S.500 will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and economically deprived nations of Africa and Asia. In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think. Thirdly, the bill will not permit the entry of subversive persons, criminals, illiterates, or those with contagious disease or serious mental illness. As I noted a moment ago, no immigrant visa will be issued to a person who is likely to become a public charge … the charges I have mentioned are highly emotional, irrational, and with little foundation in fact. They are out of line with the obligations of responsible citizenship. They breed hate of our heritage."(Senate Part 1, Book 1, pp. 1-3)

Senator Robert F. Kennedy (D-NY)

"In fact, the distribution of limited quota immigration can have no significant effect on the ethnic balance of the United States. … Total quota immigration is now 156,782; under the proposed bill, it would rise to 164,482. Even if all these immigrants came from Italy, for example, the net effect would be to increase the number of Italo-Americans by one-tenth of 1 percent of our population this year, and less as our population increases. Americans of Italian extraction now constitute about 4 percent of our population; at this rate, considering our own natural increase, it would take until the year 2000 to increase that proportion to 6 percent. Of course, S.500 would make no such radical change. Immigration from any single country would be limited to 10 percent of the total-16,500-with the possible exception of the two countries now sending more than that number, Great Britain and Germany. But the extreme case should set to rest any fears that this bill will change the ethnic, political, or economic makeup of the United States. [w]e bar immigration by those individuals who would compete for jobs for which the supply of labor is adequate for the demand … we bar immigration by individuals who have demonstrated that they do not hold such allegiance [to our fundamental precepts of political freedom and democratic government]. …(Senate Part 1, Book 2, pp.216-218, 226, 242)

Senator Hiram Fong (R-HI)

"… the people who have built up America, Anglo-Saxons, and the northern peoples of Europe, are not discriminated against in this bill. … the people from that part of the world [the Asia-Pacific Triangle] probably will never reach 1 percent of the [u.S.] population. … Our cultural pattern will never be changed as far as America is concerned.… It will become more cosmopolitan but still there is that fundamental adherence to European culture. … We feel those people [from northern Europe] who have been preferred in former immigration bills would still be treated fairly. … one of the reasons why the United States was attacked, on December 7, 1941, was because of these exclusionary laws [the 1924 Immigration Act] which had fomented so much bad feeling between the peoples of Japan and the United States."(Senate Part 1, Book 1, pp.72, 119, 120, 144)

One could post dozens of such claims made at the time, but they began the effort to change the country from one of "European Immigrants" to one of "world Immigrants".

YEah I know some don't like to hear the facts, the recent spin is so much more appealing to some but.... if I am wrong, post the immigration facts along with snide comments :P

But really all this is water under the bridge, the horse is out of the barn, we are committed to this experiment.

MAny immigrants of recent have contributed to this country in many ways and the point is not to "down" them at all, the questions are I suppose:

-Are we becoming a house divided?

-Can a house divided stand?

Again I will repeat, while most choose to focus on the racial and ethnic issues, we are fracturing on many lines, those are just the ones people love to kick around. (myself included)

Oh that we could all be like you. :P

Everyone like to experience different peoples and all that, it's one of the reason I have enjoyed my time in places from the Amazon river to the Polar cap.

But the fact is most people gravitate to people kinda like them when the visiting is over. Often the similarities over ride the differences. AS a more conservative person I am probably more likely to become friends with a like minded person of any race than a diehard white liberal, in fact in places I have worked, thats been my experience. I like to interact with Libs but there is a difference between office parties and cook outs and people in a closer circle. THis is true even with intelligence, smart people rarely hang out with ummmm Less smart people.

Of course we are talking about "tend to" here and not any rule.

Now it's true romance is the bridge across the widest of gaps but you don't build a community or nation on marriage and romance is the exception to all things anyway.

IN my city, the most ethnically diverse place you will find is the Chinese Buffett, man that place draws everyone equally.

(for what it's worth)
