Hey, all!

Wedding (well, at a courthouse with 5 people) is in 10 days! Can't wait!

We finally got the social security card yesterday, which is fantastic. We still need to find a civil surgeon, but I think we should be able to do that somewhat easily, hopefully!

Last week, we got my fiance his drivers permit, BUT in NC, they only give it as long as they have a valid visa. I didn't care for the permit because we will hopefully find reasonable insurance soon and come back for the license, but I would really like to figure out how to get his license to be valid between when his I-94 expires and he gets a green card. My thinking is that we will apply for AOS in 3 or 4 weeks, but his I-94 expires in mid-December. Does USCIS or Homeland security or NVC send a receipt or anything stating that he is in-status once we apply for AOS? What have others used for this in the past?

Thanks!

OH-- and has anyone found a good car insurance company for new-to-the-US drivers? Our current one (Erie) wants to charge $250/month and swears that it's normal. We *could* do it but on one salary, things are already tight.

Each state is different but most can't get a drivers license until you have EAD car, I am in Georgia and could not get my license till my GC was approved. If he has an international permit he can drive on that for 12 months or even his home country license.

As far as Insurance goes wow we are with state farm and we have 2 cars and only pay 161 a month. Shop around that's what I did as I thought my husband was paying too much with who he was with. SO i looked up on the net and got quotes.

Divorced !st November 2012.

Each state does it different, mostly you can get a DL with a valid visa, they most likely will expire when your visa expires. Renew when your I797 arrives and so on till you get your green card. Being new to US you are considered a new driver until you have been here a while 1/2 years. Their are companies like Dairyland, etc. who insure new drivers if your own company is to outrageous.

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

each state is different. You will get a receipt for the AOS filing and our state accepts that as valid for 2 years along with a copy of the marriage certificate(length of the conditional green card) Alla got her drivers license just two months after being here and 2 months before her green card or EAD. Check with your state, sounds like NC may be the same.

I use GEICO insurance and added on my husbands name to the policy. They did not increase the premium for a new driver but I'm sure down the road they'll find some way to charge me more :hehe:

Early congratulations!!!

My insurance company was going to raise mine from $65 to $202 per month when I added my husband. I called around and found Allstate, which is going to be $131 per month. It's still doubled, but much better than $200. Give them a try:)

I would check the North Carolina DMV website to see what they accept for documents. My husband (in Virginia) was able to get a license once he had his EAD, though that was at the discretion of the location.

As for insurance, call around. Are you insured, or do neither of you have a policy? I added my husband as a driver on my State Farm policy that I had had for several years and my rates did not increase at all. In fact, they decreased as I got a multi-driver discount! Even when he got his own car and added that, the increase was only $61 a month for the extra car.
