My Filipina unit thrives on rice, and I learned long ago that good rice is so much better. My mom was a good cook, but straight american food, and the few times we had rice it was minute rice with some wretched canned chow mein and canned crunchy noodles. I had to sneak-feed it to the dog under the table or spit it out on my napkin and smuggle it out to the bathroom and flush it down the toilet.

We bought some horrific ####### from Sam's Club that took us three years to finish off because we only ate it when we ran out of Thai Golden Star Prime Grade Jasmine. Sam's sells that too, and it's pretty reasonable. The awful stuff was grown in the US. We had some Calrose we didn't like as much either. This Jasmine is better and worth paying for.

They sell something in a much smaller sack, a burlap sack, also from Thailand. It's pretty expensive. Not sure if it is worth the extra money. Can't remember the name but it is blue ink on a burlap bag, made to look like it is for the King of Thailand you know.

You can't buy it in a regular grocery store because they sell it in three sizes: Too small, way too small, and by the thimble-full.

What do you buy?

It is interesting to me how food staples, such as rice, are common to different cultures in different continents. For instance, for my Dominican husband rice is a food that must be present when eating the main meal of the day. As he puts it, "If I don't eat rice I feel as though I have not eaten." He is not, however, picky as to the particular brand of the rice. He simply needs basic white rice to be happy, as long as he prepares the rice himself. For him, it is not as much about the brand, but the preparation what it important. We cannot agree on what constitutes good rice. I actually prefer to eat brown rice rather than white rice. If I eat white rice I'd rather eat jasmine rice than the "regular" basic white rice. I also like to use much garlic and onions and do not use much oil, whereas my husband does not add anything but salt and oil, and lots.

Not being a big fan of rice, however I do like the flavor of basmati over jasmin.

We buy the local brand Hinode rice here in Hawaii. I assume they import the rice from somewhere else though. Also the wife and I prefer the hapa rice, which is half white and brown rice, or we call it the ABS-CBN rice  .

Rin is definitely a Three Ladies rice person. Learned more about rice in the past five years than I ever thought I would. Discovered I had an inadequate rice cooker to begin with. Also, she varies the amount of water she adds depending on the age of the rice. When a new crop arrives (shown on the side of the bag) she alters the amount of water in the rice cooker until she gets the right texture/taste in the final rice. Newer rice takes less water.

Now in need of a new rice cooker (appliance, not wife). Any suggestions on which cookers are best? Rin preferred a certain brand of cooker in Thailand that isn't available in the USA (also can't bring one back due to voltage difference). Her main complaint about the one I have is rice cannot be left in the cooker overnight on "hold warm" without burning.
