Just to be safe...have seen that here a hundred times...sometimes it is harmless and sometimes it has caused delays. Simple question--if it isn't required in the instructions or in the guides, FORGET IT !!!

If I recall you are putting together the I-864 and DS-230 packages--what specifically is causing you trouble?? Those instructions are among the easiest, but there are some nuances to be sure.

Well, actually extra information can and does cause delays--Navy had a problem as did I--different issues, but in each case it was doing something that each of us thought was helpful--and it wasn't. I had a small delay--a couple of weeks, but his was more serious, so please just send what is either spelled out explicitly in the instructions or recommended in the guides... it is so, so simple when we just follow the directions.

The difference here is trying to sort out fact from opinion...it's not always easy, but you will figure it out--

This is the problem....

I am getting confilcted info from VJ, when it comes to the DS-2001(formerly OF-169), and the DS-157. Are eithier of them required to be sent in with the packet 3 or not?

DS-157 is for NON-immigrant visas (K-1 or K-3; not for CR-1, IR-1), so no you don't need it. DS-2001 is RARELY used, and is not mentioned at all in the German embassy website, so it looks like it is not required. This is directly from the Department of State website:

The DS-2001 has been redesigned as a one-page optional form to be used by applicants or their agents to notify post or NVC that they are ready for interview.

The key word is optional and it is not used by many, if not most of the consulates worldwide, and since Germany doesn't even mention it, most likely not required.

I stand corrected...by following all the links at the German embassy website, they DO want the DS-2001, and it looks like there is a similar form specific to them that they will request later. Here are their instructions:

# Paying the visa processing fee.

* The NVC which will provide detailed information on method of payment.

# After the NVC has received confirmation of payment, they will then request that the required documentation be completed.

* To be completed by the visa applicant:

o DS-230 (pdf), Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration (pdf)

o DS-2001 (pdf), Applicant's Declaration of Qualification for Immigrant Visa Interview

* To be completed by the American Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident petitioner:

o I-864, Affidavit of Support

A processing fee may be applicable for this form. If so, this form will not be sent until the processing fee payment is confirmed.

# After the forms are completed, it is now time to mail all required documentation to the National Visa Center. This includes:

* DS-230

* DS-2001

* All collected documentation listed under [step 4: Gather Required Documentation].

No, what I sent you is not the DS-2001. It seems to be a special document just for Germany, so if you use it, I would also send the DS-2001 since their directions specifically specify it. I don't really know what the checklist is for, except that it is from a link on the German website. Probably a quick email is in order to ask EXACTLY what they want.
