A truck filled with President Obama’s podiums and audio equipment was stolen in Henrico just days before his visit to Chesterfield.

We confirmed an investigation with the U.S. Defense Department. There are still a lot of questions. The biggest one being did the thieves intentionally target the President’s truck or did they take advantage of a crime of opportunity and give a big “uh-oh” when they saw what was inside.

When you see President Obama speak, there is a pretty typical setup including the presidential seal on a podium, the see-thru Teleprompter and a portable sound system.

Thieves saw the truck carrying that equipment and couldn’t resist the target.

We’re told the truck was parked at the Virginia Center Commons Courtyard Marriott in advance on Wednesday’s presidential visit to Chesterfield.

Sources said inside that vehicle was about $200,000 worth of sound equipment, several podiums and presidential seals, behind which only the President himself can stand.

It’s unclear from the story whether TOTUS itself was taken.

Amber alert issued for TOTUS

BREAKING OPINION: Panic everyone. The Teleprompter of The United States is missing. Someone has stolen the beloved presidential teleprompter. This left the president speechless.

Perhaps it is a kidnapping.

UPDATE: A hand-written e-mail message from the president: “OK, whoever has stolen TOTUS can bring it back, no questions asked. I will turn my back for 5 minutes and allow the culprit a chance for amnesty. If it is returned and placed on my desk while my back is turned, I will consider the case closed. If not, I am going to punish the whole class.”

UPDATE III: TOTUS left a lengthy post on his blog. He said he was kidnapped: “Help! I’m sure you’ve experienced this. One minute you’re sitting in the back of a truck, not a care in the world, waiting to continue your road trip for yet another appearance before adoring fans — and then your world is turned upside down.”

Some are saying that this missive casts a doubt on whether this is a real crime or whether it is a hoax staged by a desperate teleprompter who seeks attention for himself. UI will keep readers posted with further updates as developments warrant.

UPDATE IV: Despite unprecedented security — including 40-SUV caravans wherever he goes — the apparent kidnapping has baffled concerned conservative citizens. From Doug Powers: “What’s next? Finding Air Force One up on blocks?”

Good thing Sasha and Malia were not camping out in the back of the truck.
