question-receive a new passport the same day w/o expediter

Hi VJ surfers,

I had heard from one of reputable VJ members that one can receive his first new U.S. passport the same day (without going through the third party expediters) & i had memorized it. today i searched on VJ & found out that even if one apply in one of passort agency centers with an international ticket in hand, it normally takes 2 weeks to receive the passport except if there is an emergency such as health concern, relative death,...).So I wonder if any of you except JUST... got your passport the same day.

My understanding was if you had a flight scheduled soon after your oath ceremony, you can go to travel.state.gov and get a location from there. I was also under the impression that it will be given to you on the same day.

If you go to the passport agency nearest you early enough in the morning, you might get it the same day - otherwise they will have you pick it up the next day. You have to have proof of international travel within two weeks, and you have to call and make an appointment.

May 20, 2008: Green card approved

Yes,

you need proof that you need the passport within 2 weeks.

Book an international flight online with Continental the night before your appointment with the passport agency. Pay with credit card and print out the e-ticket. Show it at your passport agency appointment. When you come home cancel your flight (must be within 24 hours of booking) and get all of your money back.

Another option is to have a letter from your employer that you need to go on a business trip ASAP, not later then within one week, and take that with you.

Heard that the DOS added more service centers, see they have on in Minneapolis now, still downtown, wonder why they don't have these at airports with plenty of parking. You also have to make an appointment first, that is where the two weeks come into effect.

Thanks all of you.

I'm gonna make an appointment with the agency near to my hometown & let you know if I receive it in one day or as they say in 2 weeks.

Actually in a rush to make a trip, or just concerned that the DOS will lose your Certificate of Naturalization? Still don't know why they can't put it in the same envelope as your new passport that you have to sign for. But send it back in an untraceable first class brown envelope from the same exact address. Maybe they feel since you now have a passport, really don't need that certificate anymore. If that is the way they think, they do have a point. Our certificates were buried after that stage.

Wife was in a panic without a passport from fear something could have happened to her mom. Also considered the expense we would have in making that trip to our nearest service center, would cost a lot more than replacing her certificate if we had to. Or have a long fight with the DOS. So we went the expedient route, ironically while we live in Wisconsin, was sent to the New Orleans office right after Katrina did her damage. But her passport came back in 13 long days, her certificate three days later via first class mail. Since we live in a rural area, installed an extra large mailbox so our postman had no reason to fold it. But wonder about those apartment buildings with those super tiny mail boxes.

Was in no rush for my stepdaughter, and didn't want to lay out the extra bucks for expedient service, hers was sent to the Chicago office, typically one day first class mail service for us. To my amazement, our postman knocked on my door when her passport came in, eleven days, two days faster than expedient service, and in an overnight cardboard container that I also had to sign for. Her certificate came in, also in a brown first class envelope the following day.

In our case, actually got better faster service by NOT paying that extra for expedient service.

But one thing remains the same for both of them, still have to maintain their home country's passport to enter and leave their home country, where before they just needed their green card to come back. The bottom line is they just traded their green card for a US passport, nothing else has changed. Either have to pay for that green card or for that US passport, both have to be renewed in ten years. Passport is a little cheaper though, but they still get you one way or the other.

For getting Passport at the same day,you have to take several documents including travel ticket with a departure date within 12 business days,old passport or certified copy of birth certificate and some other documenst at your local passport agency ,click here to get more information.
