The California Police Chiefs Association said today it “strongly opposes” the California Medical Association's recent announcement advocating the legalization of marijuana saying "There isn’t even close to enough medical data illustrating the medicinal benefits to warrant legalization of this drug, especially when you consider the public safety and health risks associated with its use. It’s easy to see why legalizing marijuana is a bad idea. Police officers witness the negative impact of marijuana usage on a daily basis in our communities and on our roads. There’s been a rise in the number of juveniles who are seeking treatment for addiction to the drug. We don’t see any positive outcomes from legalizing marijuana. The federal government agrees. We applaud the recent decision to step up federal enforcement of illegal marijuana dispensaries.”

Gotta love to hate California. Denounce pot while catering to the illegals, pro gay agenda, and anti gun nuts.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Ah, who cares?

If you are going to outlaw a plant, why not kudzu or crabgrass? They can come eradicate that ####### out of my lawn anytime they want!

Legalize it and treat it like alcohol. Then it would be hard for kids to get.

All of my gay friends smoke pot too, so that doesn't make sense.

It's legal here in Alaska. I haven't smoked the stuff in years, but at least I know if I ever did I wouldn't be breaking the law.

Police chiefs also oppose concealed carry. Shocker that they'd oppose marijuana.

We have medical pot here and otherwise it is kinda, sorta illegal. You could get arrested for smoking pot in Vermont if you did it while walking down the street and if you were also throwing rocks at windows while doing it.

If I wanted to smoke it, and I do not have any desire to and never did, I could get it easier and cheaper than beer. I know exactly where. If they "legalized" it I would not smoke it either. So you can say the law makes no difference. Alla didn't even know what it smelled like but she found out when walking around in Burlington.

I just hate to see all this money spent on something that is fairly harmless and available anywhere despite spending billions.

The fact is that there is an industry that all those billions are spent on and they do not want to lose their gravy train.

It was legal in Alaska for like 30+ years until George Bush Sr. used extortion and threatened to take away all of Alaska's highway funding so they made it illegal over night (it didn't even go to vote). That's when it became a big deal. When it was legal nobody here ever paid attention to it. Now that it's legal again it's no big deal.

Kind of like Prohibition or something.

what are you smoking? like kids can't get cigarette and alcohol? you are way out of touch or you live in the wrong neighborhood if you think this is true.

a lot of states don't care about the casual dope smoker, but do about the distributor so vermont is no different.

legalizing it won't be simple either. there will always be an underground market for the "good stuff" so even if legal, they will still spend billions busting people determined to sell the good stuff.

if you think the gov't is going to allow any sort of weed on the market, you are super wrong. the food and drug admin will have a standard and anytime some smoke is on the street that goes beyond that standard, it will make the 5 O'clock news.

legalizing solves nothing, really. just opens the door for more gov't employees to enforce the standard and administer all the various programs including the ones to help people kick the habit.

remember? everything is made complicated in the USA!

The reason I don't like the idea of legalizing it is that its such a big business for the big time criminals who participate in it, and they aren't going to go away. If they can't make money at selling Pot, then they will turn to something worse, and who knows what that is?

I don't care for how much money we spend fighting the drug war though. In short, I want to keep it illegal, but I don't want the laws enforced.

Exactly!

Whenever they say "This costs the government XXX billions" it means that someone is making XXX billions and they aren't going to want to change the status quo.

Why don't we legalize marijuana but make, say, soccer illegal instead? It would be much easier to fight a war against soccer players
