Wisconsin town wants to outlaw biking and walking

The town of Hull, Wisconsin has a creative response to solving the problem of bike and pedestrian safety: Forbid bikers and pedestrians from using the roads.

Hull wants to restrict some of its roads to vehicle-only traffic -- although if you log your daily run with the City Council they might consider making an exception:

A town public safety committee, which examined general safety on town roads this summer, came up with a draft ordinance in September that requires biking, running or walking groups to register their travel plans with the town or bans them from using roads outright.

The ordinance is in response to what town officials say is a growing problem with road safety, but local groups are concerned about the impact on biking and running in the town.

Yes, one might well be concerned that not allowing biking or running on the roads would have an impact on biking and running.

Hull actually has barely any traffic accidents -- there hasn't been a crash involving a bike or pedestrian since 2008, and before that there had been less than one a year. But bikers and runners annoy cars sometimes, and isn't that just as bad?

[Town Chairman John Holdridge] said the town gets a lot of complaints about groups of people running down the middle of the road at night or taking up most of the road during the day, or bikers riding on the wrong side of the road.

Are you saying they've been breaching road-sharing etiquette?? By god, throw them in jail immediately!

Not sure I'd advocate banning bikes from the road, but it does annoy me when a bicyclist thinks the rules of the road do not apply to him or her. unfortunately, this is a problem with most bicyclists. I'd love to see cops handing out tickets to bicyclists for a change. Can't tell you how many bicyclists I've seen blow through red lights in Madison.

Since when are cyclists different from 90% of motorists in this country?

I can count the number of motorists around here who understand what a yield_sign_on_white.jpgsign means on the fingers of one foot.

sorry, but I can count the number of bicyclists who know what a stop sign or red light mean. I'd say most bicyclists in Madison blow right through red lights and stop signs. The same is not true for motorists

Walking my dogs every day has given me a new understanding of what real dicks a lot of drivers can be towards pedestrians. I can't tell you the number of times I have been yelled at because I am walking on a green light and in the middle of the street the "don't walk" light that flashes for about 5 seconds after you press the button goes off. They don't look at pedestrians in the cross walk, they look at their light, and if its green they feel its their God given right to go and us useless pedestrians are just in their way. They believe that if I had gotten to that intersection 2 seconds earlier and given them a more solid "WALK" light that somehow they would get to turn sooner. Asses. I love the douchebags who don't see the pedestrian standing on the corner with 2 dogs and just turn right when their light turns green while I have a solid WALK sign. Drivers are idiots.

And bicyclist are worse to pedestrians. People- sidewalks are NOT for bicycles. So why some of you #### whipe cyclist feel that I should have to get out of your way I don't know. Read the handbook. Pedestrians have the right of way.

There's my rant for the day. :luv:

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Hull wants to restrict some of its roads to vehicle-only traffic -- although if you log your daily run with the City Council they might consider making an exception:

This town is only considering "some roads", the federal Gov which Steve Loves has banned both running and biking on nearly all interstate highways.

SOme roadways are best left to automobile traffic, I'll let the locals decide whats best for their area.

Interstate highways restrict pedestrians and motorized vehicles for public safety concerns Danno. I wonder if you would be so understanding of local standards if a town decided that it was closing its roads to motor traffic.
