The interviewer at my fiances interview last month asked her why didn't we do a introduction? He said since shes Yoruba why would her parents allow her go to America and get married without doing a introduction.. She told him that most of my family are in America and we just agreed on doing everything here in America.. We feel like if we would have done a introduction and brought pics he would have used that against us.. So for us its safer not to do any type of traditional ceremony.. Better to be safe than sorry..

My husband is also from the Yuroba tribe and I had to get approval from the oldest living male in the Village before we could marry. I am not sure if that is an introduction or not. I knew they would approve so shortly after i arrived there we were married. We were preparing even before I was introduced.

Guys:

Does Traditional marriage aka native law and custom be considered as a Celebration/Ceremony for engagement?

Can it be use as ceremony for engagement during K1 visa interview???

Advice please...

If you did Traditional marriage in Naija, then i will advice you not to file for K 1..

The C/O know a lot about Naija culture and may delay you in the long run......I had a friend you went this route and it was not a pleasant experience... :bonk:

Nigeria Traditional Marriage Ceremony is not a legal Marriage for USCIS immigration purposes neither is it a requirment for approving K1 Fiancee Visa by the USCIS.I do not see any reasons why the Consulars officers will use that to deny an applicant a K1 Fiancee visa because he or she did a traditional marriage ceremony. Nigeria Traditional Marriage ceremoney is not accepted as a valid Marriage for USCIS since there is no record of proceedings to show that it is legal marriage.

Based on these information, a K1 applicants who did a Traditional Marriage ceremony is eligble for a K1 Visa approval since they have not yet married and traditional Marriage is not recognise by the USCIS. It is obiviously that they cannot use Traditional Marriage ceremony to change status in the US. They must perform a legal marriage accepted by USCIS with an issuance of Marriage certificate when both of the couple resides in the US.

What the CO's should do and what they do are not in alignment there. Traditional marriages have caused denials both for being married and not being married. The problem is the intending immigrant is presumed guilty and it is their burden to prove otherwise. You can show your traditional marriage and be accused of being married. What evidence does the immigrant have with them that they are indend single. The CO can assume that they did both weddings ( court and traditional as is common practice in Nigeria) and the immigrant must prove they only did the traditional but ut us assumed they are hiding the court wedding. People have been denied in Nigeria because they refer to each other as husband and wife in emails. If in AP they find anyone refering the wedding/reception you are headed for denial. After getting denied in this way you can't turn around and apply for a CR1 because then you will be told you aren't married ( no certificate of marriage )

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Really? Can you provide proof that "Nigeria Traditional Marriage Ceremony is not a legal Marriage for USCIS immigration purposes?"

Does the Nigerian Government consider the Nigeria Traditional Marriage Ceremony to be a legal marriage?

In order to receive a K-1 visa, the applicant must show that he/she is free to marry. Is a person who has gone through the Nigeria Traditional Marriage Ceremony free to marry? Can this person go an marry another person in a civil marriage in Nigeria? If not, then this person is married.

I agree with u Jojo. Peeps who get denied for conducting traditional marriages should face the music and refile.

What baffles me is the audacity of the clowns at Lagos to deny cases based on an introduction ceremony. Who told them introduction was anything more ...

They have no justification to deny anybody based on an introduction it just goes to show ♓☺W lawless and arrogant people can be simply because they wield some influence in this process.

To think that people with ill intent haven't thought of a marriage based petition as a method on entry to the US would be under estimating these people. I am sure they have tried and will try again. Have they pulled it off ? Only time will tell. Back in the day when Russia was the bad guys you say news stories about people that lay in hiding for decades to pull off their evil. All these people need is a lonely person at the other end of an internet connection. People shouldn't get so bent out of shape about things that that contain true statements. Are they people of ill intent in the US , yes but they don't need to try and fool an embasy official. Be real , marriage based petitions are a relatively easy path for terrorist , scammers and other socially unacceptable person to get into the US.

I am sure no terrorist would want to use the marriage route with all the FBI checks inherent in the process when there are far more easier routes to get into the US.

They use it as an excuse to deny just because they feel like it. If they can't find a reason they make it up.

Refiling two to three times = fees. B-)

Right. The US Government needs to cheat people out of a few thousand dollars in processing fees. That will really help with the $3,000,000,000,000 annual US budget. How much do you think it costs the US to have an embassy? Guess the fees generate a big profit after the costs of running the embassy is considered.

I am not sure what goes on at other US consulates...but its an open secret that Lagos is a cash cow and generates in excess of 6-10billion naira annually.

I am sure no terrorist would want to use the marriage route with all the FBI checks inherent in the process when there are far more easier routes to get into the US.

Then you are a living in a fantasy. Family based visas once you get through the initial checks are the easiest to hide under. You fake a family and lay low. And we already know about half the marriages from Nigeria are scammers looking to be in the US. The only ones that would fail security checks are those with a history. I would be willing to bet that most of the 9-11 crewe would have been able to get a family based visa if the found the right lonely woman online.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Right. Where are you getting your information from? The open market in Lagos? Lots of dependable rumors in Lagos? I hear there is a price who wants to give me money.
