Be very careful with these types of celebrations/ceremonies for it can be misinterpreted by the CO as marriage, specially if you are filing for a fiance visa-K1. Also, be very careful not to refer to each other in your emails or letters and etc. adn wifey or husband if you are only engaged. This could be used against you during interviews.

Do your homework in regards to the Nigerian customs where engagement is concerned and then stay within its guidelines. Being cautious is a good thing when dealing with US Embassy in Lagos, they could twist things around easily if one is not careful.

Best wishes and good luck!

If the "traditional marriage aka native law and custom" is recognized locally as a legal marriage, then it will be a basis to deny the K1. A married person cannot use a K-1 visa.

Most people on this board will tell you not to go through with any "marriage" ceremony. An engagement party is okay. Anything involving a "marriage ceremony" will put the K1 visa application at jeopardy. Don't do it.

In the immigration game, it doesn't matter if you think/feel/know that the "traditional marriage" is not a legal marriage. It is what the Consular Officer thinks since it is his opinion that matters in getting the visa.

Mention anything remotely related to what u have described above and kiss the K1 process goodbye at the consulate level.

Wean urself of such mentality or go the K3 route.

I had an traditional marriage in Nigeria, and NO! it can not be considered an engagement. If you had a traditional ceremony then you are married. Have you ever considered filing I130? I did. In the eyes of the law both here and in Nigeria (you are married).

The interviewer at my fiances interview last month asked her why didn't we do a introduction? He said since shes Yoruba why would her parents allow her go to America and get married without doing a introduction.. She told him that most of my family are in America and we just agreed on doing everything here in America.. We feel like if we would have done a introduction and brought pics he would have used that against us.. So for us its safer not to do any type of traditional ceremony.. Better to be safe than sorry..

If you have done a traditional over there and during AP they do a check and find ANYONE that says they attended your traditonal then you will be denied. Many times AP means they have an investogator out talking to the neighbors.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Oh yes they are. They send out Nigerians who pretend to be your friend and ask around about you. I have even seen the job advertisement at the Consulate.

Nigeria may not be that organized, but the US government is better organized.

Nigeria is a high fraud country. The underwear bomber is Nigerian. Muslim militants exists in Nigeria. This seems to me to be very good reasons to scrutinize and investigate people wanting to come to the US from Nigeria.

@S_R" My response was to Naijaboy who said that "Nigeria is not that organized. It was not meant to be disparaging about Nigeria.

America has terrorists too - Timothy McVeigh, Ted Kaczynski, etc. We scrutinize and investigate these people too. I never said we didn't have these type of characters. I was responding to Naijaboy's point about Nigeria not being organized as it affects the US Embassy's on the ground background investigation of potential immigrants. I didn't see or think about going off topic about US terrorists as I don't see how that relates to the subject at hand about on the ground investigators from the US Embassy scrutinizing intending immigrants from Nigeria.

It's hard to convey tone on a forum like this. Don't assume the worse, give posters the benefit of the doubt, and response appropriately.

This is my final post on this digression as it does nothing to help the OP.

To think that people with ill intent haven't thought of a marriage based petition as a method on entry to the US would be under estimating these people. I am sure they have tried and will try again. Have they pulled it off ? Only time will tell. Back in the day when Russia was the bad guys you say news stories about people that lay in hiding for decades to pull off their evil. All these people need is a lonely person at the other end of an internet connection. People shouldn't get so bent out of shape about things that that contain true statements. Are they people of ill intent in the US , yes but they don't need to try and fool an embasy official. Be real , marriage based petitions are a relatively easy path for terrorist , scammers and other socially unacceptable person to get into the US.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
