hello guys..im just new here in US..barely three months and i can say that it is really hard for me to get a job esp that my time limits to morning only.. yes i did try at indeed.com and i've sent my resume there but until now no one calls for an interview. I think my availability for work affects my application. I cant work the whole day because there's no one who will take care of my kids. its really frustrating on my part but im still hoping that i can get a job soon.

I've been looking for a job since a couple of weeks. Since I don't have a degree I lower my expectations and I decided to apply in retail jobs, restaurants, etc. I was called for an interview for a seasonal position and even though I thought I did good they didn't hire me. I don't know if they focus on experience in the states. My question is: what is the best way to consider a qualified employee for a position that only requires High school?. Do they consider my experience in another country? Also I need an advice about how they manage the background check if I lived most of the time abroad. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Just by looking at your title I can tell you right off hand. Welcome to the most common paradox we have in the states.

I wish you luck.

You almost have to prove to the job you want, that you don't need their job.

A bank is a place that will lend you money, if you can prove that you don't need it.

Hi.

Ive worked in IT for 20 years before I moved over here back in October of 2009. Playing Mr Mom till my green card drove me nuts !

IT work in the mid west is nigh on non existent !

I can only share my experience in finding work. As others have mentioned I Started with agencies doing day to day work. 1 day contracts and a few odds and sods to get my name out there. Yes sometimes the hours and the pay wasn't brilliant but after being cooped up in the house for 6 months I was chewing at the bit to get out there and make a good impression.

After that work fizzled out I actually resorted to even looking on Monster.com and Craigslist for work. I also broadened my look for pretty much any job I was capable of doing and landed a part time job at a local computer store (Craigslist), (Prior to moving here I never had any sales experience in my life)! :)

But the good news is that I kept looking and kept applying and just didn't give up in looking for work that was more suitable to my skill set. Finally last June I was lucky to land a network engineer / analyst role at a local credit union (Monster.com).

Don't give up hope. work is out there. you just have to face the fact that there is a very strong chance that you may have to take a very large detour in your career to get to where you want to be.

Good luck !

I had a pretty high-level job with an industrial broker back home that allowed me to come and study in the US in the first place. I adjusted status to permanent resident in January and looked for a part-time admin job here on the coast that would allow me to continue my studies in fall. Not easy. I think I applied for about 60 positions before I "caved" and applied with McDonalds for a cashier position. And no, I do not think this position is beneath me or something. I have two cleaning jobs that pay about $25 an hour - I just can't get more of those  .

Anyways, the day after I applied with McD I received a call for an interview the following day. I went and they offered me Community Outreach right off the bat. I was invited to the team meeting the next day (which I attended), scheduled for orientation that Saturday and to shadow one of the team members on Monday. 3 hours later I received a call the same day, that the owner/operator would like to discuss other options with me on Thursday and we cancelled the orientation and the plans for Monday.

Considering that I applied for a cashier's position, was invited straight to head-quarters instead of a store, interviewed with the owner of a 20-store franchise directly - not too bad. I believe we have to think outside the box when coming here and take chances we might not have considered before.

Good luck y'all.

All done ;-)
