Priority task list on arrival in New York

Hi there

1. I arrive in New York on November 10TH. Our wedding is November 20th. Will it be possible to get Social security number/ bank account etc. within that 10 day window? Are there more important things I need to do on arrival? (I know we have to get marriage license!)

2. We are going to be subletting different addresses for about 4 months. We have a post office box for post. My question is, Can I put the po box as our address or do I give them the first address we reside in and then keep them updated every time we move?

3. If the latter, will this affect the speed of the process.

4. Does anybody know the approximate current timeline for EAD and parole to come through if applying from New York?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

1, you can apply for the SSN in 2 weeks after entry. You will not get it that quickly. May take a month or more to get the SSN.

2, unsure as we did not use a PO box we had a physical address.

3, nothing really speeds up the process it is different for everyone.

4, living in NY means nothing for AOS, everyones AOS is processed at the NBC, 3-4 months for EAD/AP for everyone.

1. Usually need to wait at least 10 days after arrival to be on the SAVE system so no you won't get it that quick.

2. Put the PO Box as your mailing address but a street address for physical address. The different addresses might cause questions.

3. Yes. changing address during the process tends to lose mail, which might or might not get returned to USCIS and if it's not you won't know it's been returned (they tell you if it is) and then you could miss important dates.

4. around 2 months for EAD/AP. The AOS documents are sent to Chicago and where you're from doesn't make a difference.

if the UK citizen is female I would wait till you're married to get SSN so you can have your married name on it.

Actually it is usually safer to apply in your maiden name first and then change it. Many issues have arisen by trying to get it for the first time after marriage. I'm hoping that doesn't scare the OP but if it's possible to get it in maiden first (as in the wedding isn't too soon) then it's best to do that then change it later.

I'm in CT but it live on the border of NY. My husbands biometrics was in NY anyway :star: . His SSC he got rather quickly. We applied about 10 days after he arrived at the local DSS office and he got it in the mail shortly there after. He could not get on my bank account without the SSN card but I have read of others on here not have a problem so depends on your bank I guess. We are now at 2 months waiting for EAD/AP and going nuts cause financially it is very hard right now and he is going stir crazy and getting very tired of sitting at home without being able to get out (no car) etc :crying: but we hope it will arrive soon! As for the rest I wont answer because I have no first hand experience with it. Best of luck with your next step in this journey and congrats on your upcoming wedding!! :)

Thank you everybody for all this sound advice. Much appreciated.

I am not really sure how to proceed regarding the address situation.. It seems we will just have to try and stay on top of it with chasing mail at any previous address. In reality we are probably only talking about 2 addresses but it would be a real bore if it slows things up.

Is there any harm in trying to get the SSC after a week say? Presumably the worst that will happen is that I don't appear on the system?

Do let me know yuor thoughts.

Thanks again.

FYI I am the non USC and am male! So the name change doesn't apply... Does it?!

No harm in trying a week after, I don't think it will be a problem but as it seems the British one in the mix is your future wife and if her name changes then you will have to get another SSC so maybe it is best to just wait till after the name change? I mean she cant work till you apply for the AOS/EAD and get the EAD which is all after the wedding. Just my thoughts on it. Either way she can get a card now and then get another one after :)

No harm in trying in a week to see if you are in the system, and heh, nope, name change stuff doesn't apply to you. Easier for a man. :D
