N-600 Part 3 Question 5

I am going to file for a Certificate of Citizenship for my adopted children. It will make things easier if they have to apply for stuff.

I am filling out the N-600 but have a problem with part 3, question 5

Information about entry into the United States and current immigration status:

A. Do they want the date of entry when they came on their K-2 or do they want their last entry?

B. Depending on answer A I guess I fill with the information

C. I entered as a ... depending on A

The last time they entered in August, they used their US passport! But when they entered in 2008 they came on K-2 and their German passport.

The Date of Entry means original entry to the US. So in your case it would be the K-2 entry.

I am somewhat confused how did they got the US passport without being yet citizens. Are you sure it is US passport and not AP?

US Passport is only issued to the Citizens of the US, not even to LPR.

They got their US passport issued after I adopted them. They gained citizenship through the adoption being lawful permanent resident, living in the custody of the US citizen.

Thanks for your answer, I thought I have to put in the original entry but wasn't sure and the instruction for sure does not state that.

Sib,

the purpose of a Certificate of Citizenship is to get the first U.S. passport. That's it.

If your children have U.S. passports already, what are you planing on doing with the Certificates? Show them around when they go clubbin' or put them in a frame on the wall in their room?

I think that is not a bad idea for her to have those certificates.

Even if the passports are proof enough of citizenship ,I believe that she is just trying to be covered for any What Ifs; I would personally do the same.

They also have German citizenship and when renewing that passport they have to document when they got citizenship. So they either have to show my naturalization document and their adoption decree or they show a certificate of citizenship showing the date and that they were under 18 and did not need BBG.

I did not know about that problem either, but a friend of mine was just going through that problem with his kids and renewal of German passport.

I was debating it myself (I for sure can spend the $ 1100 differently) but it makes sense.

A BBG is not needed if the child becomes a (U.S.) citizen automatically, without any action of the person him or herself involved, as it's the case here.

Furthermore, parents can do nothing that would cause the loss of their children's (German) citizenship.

How can the German national now proof when U.S. citizenship was obtained, or that it was obtained before the 18th birthday? By submitting an original U.S. passport that was issued before the 18th birthday!

Seems pretty simple to me. Yet you are willing to pay $1,200 in order to avoid showing the German consulate your children's U.S. passports?

It's none of my business; it's just that I think it's a waste of hard-earned cash. Luckily, it's not mine.

if it was that easy ...

A friend of mine had a lot of trouble renewing the German passport for his kids (both under 18 at the time and they both had issued US passports). The consulate insisted on getting a Certificate of Citizenship for the kids. He did not have it at the time and they eventually were satisfied with a copy of his N-400 to verify that the children were listed on there and received citizenship with them. I could not understand that either.

So to be safe we just get that Certificate and have everything.
