You can go see a recruiter anytime, if you have your green card in hand and have a GED/high school diploma you can join. Once on active duty you can apply for citizenship as well. Best bet is to go see a recruiter once you get your green card in this case your spouse has to do the AOS before they will even process for a green card.

Good luck,

You have to be a US LEGAL RESIDENT to join the Military . So that means that you first have to apply for AOS so you can get your immigration status as a legal resident when you get your green card . Also you may wish to check with the military recruiter since after you get your AOS done --it is only a Conditional green card for 2 years which you have to apply to remove the conditions . The Military is now very careful with the screening of foreign applicants especially after 9/11 who wishes to join the military .

Do you homework about the military. Recruiters are not the most straight forward people. They might tell you anything to join. They might lead you to believe what you want to believe. If you decide to definitely join, then get your green card, study for the test and take your time to select job with the military. But be aware that you might be sent to war or somewhere away from your husband for a long period of time, maybe a year or more. Many marriages do not last these times, especially new ones.

The military will help you get your citizenship faster. Oh, one more thing. The military enlistment contract is for the minimum of 8 years. Do not let the recruiter tell you something else. I am not against the military. You can have great experiences and knowledge as well as many benefits with the military. I was with the Army.

Good luck.

You cannot join until you have your green card. You must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident (green card holder) to join the military.

Filing an AOS is not enough because it could be denied.

The fastest way to become a U.S. citizen is to join the military and get killed quickly. This way they'll make you a U.S. citizen post mortum almost instantly. Hey, another reason to ask for deployment into a war zone as soon as possible.

Edited by Brother Hesekiel

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
