I thought it was a very generous program that covered huge sums of money in tuition?

The Montgomery GI Bill — Active Duty (MGIB) states that active duty members forfeit $100 per month for 12 months; if they use the benefits, they receive as of 2010[update] $1426 monthly as a full time student (tiered at lower rates for less-than-full time) for a maximum of 36 months of education benefits.

Beginning in August 2009, recipients will be eligible for greatly expanded benefits, or the full cost of any public college in their state. The new bill also provides a housing allowance and $1,000 a year stipend for books, among other benefits.

so short answer to your question - no, they just don't pay for books, but later on there was a provision to also help pay for that, in addition to that listed in the first paragraph

Question for clarification. If they put in the $100 per month for 12 months, that entitles them to the $1426 per month for school for 36 months? Does this extrapolate out like a linear function? If you put in $100 per month for 3 years, would I get 9 years worth?

So at maximum, you only get $17,112 per year, for three years of college? I realize that they are only putting in $1200 towards this benefit, but I think that is a bit shady. That wouldn't even cover 2/3 of my tuition at my alma mater.

there's also a buy up option if one wanted that.

"For every dollar the service member contributes, the federal government contributes $8. Those who contribute the maximum ($600) will receive an additional $150 per month for 36 months, or a total of $5400."

I was just talking to my brother in law about this, he is doing the buy in contribution currently. Good thing for him is that it will transfer to my niece and nephew. He was worried because tuition has doubled in the past 10 years. I was shocked to see that my alma mater is now close to 30k per year when it was only 13k per year when I was a student 10 years ago.

Military get great benefits to supplement the horrible pay they receive. I have a hard time calling for defense spending cuts in this recession knowing full well who will actually be effected.

The pay isn't that bad. I went to a service school for eight weeks, and used my per diem and travel voucher to put a down payment on a house. That was more than two decades ago.

The GI bill in my area (at least) pays roughly $4500 a semester total, but you can usually get even more than that. Then there's the one's who work for a school or state or local gov't and get the reimbursement from employer, PLUS the GI benefits...cha ching $$$. In addition:

My GI Bill was only enough to buy a new drum set when I got out.

The enlistment bonuses and the Montgomery GI Bill wasn't near as generous as it is today two decades ago, but with O-1E pay, plus per diem, and the per mile from east coast to west coast, I left Fort Belvoir with around 10K in Travelers Checks.
