For a buck each, those better be mk318mod0 rounds.

I bought some:

Silver State Armory Ammunition 5.56x45mm NATO 77 Grain Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point

and

Black Hills Ammunition 5.56x45mm NATO 77 Grain Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point

Sounded like good stuff.

Question on the cheaper stuff? Any downsides? Like can it jack up your gun or cause greater wear and tear?

Saiga 12

Benelli M-4

Spas-12

AA-12

Oh yeah! My brother had a Spas-12 back in the day. Forgot about those too. Thank you.

Don't know about Silver State but Black Hills is top notch ammo.

The other stuff is just fine.......Aguila, Prvi, Silver Bear, Federal, Wolf

I personally have a lot of Lake City ammo....check out Wideners or Classic Arms for that stuff.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Saiga shotguns are very cool. You can sweep the street with those. Personally, I like the time tested Remington 870 pump that all police use in their cruisers. I just bought my son one, an 870 Express with the extended mag tube for $330 and there's a $30 rebate right now, so the net is $300. Gives you 6 plus 1 firepower. But if you want a semi and money isn't an issue, go for it. But...you'll find most accessories for shotguns is for the pumps...mainly Remington and Mossberg. And, just the sound of "racking a round" into a pump chamber will send fear through the hearts of men, and bad guys running away.

The only ammo that might "jack your gun up" is steel case ammo...maybe. Or overly high pressure rounds fired consistently.

I like the pistol and shotgun ammo from Prvi (Serbian) and Fiocchi (Italian). Like Baron said, AIM is a good source.

Cool. Thanks, VV. Yeah I agree...anyone that hears that sound is going to have their heart skip a few beats!

You know what's really awesome about guns? For the first time in years, I actually have a ton of things I really need for Christmas! I can actually make a wish list this year!

Unless you're shooting matches and need sub-moa accuracy, you don't need super ammo. 9 times out of 10, the rifle and ammo are BOTH more accurate than what the operator is capable of. You can buy THREE TIMES as many rounds of Wolf as you can that stuff and even though it's not going to be sub-moa accurate like those will, it'll get YOU good enough to where you'll start to see a difference between those "special" rounds and the run of the mill cheap stuff.

The ammo you have is wonderful ammo. Just make sure you shoot the cheap stuff, and more cheap stuff, and more cheap stuff, before you try anything with that good stuff.

Question on the cheaper stuff? Any downsides? Like can it jack up your gun or cause greater wear and tear?

No.

The only downside is you can't reload it. That's it. There are so many false claims out there about what it does or doesn't do and when you talk to people about those claims it's "Well, I've never used it. I'd never shoot that stuff in my gun." And then you talk to others and they say things like, "I've ran about 8,000 of Wolf through my rifle and haven't had a single issue."

Ignore the mall ninjas. Try stuff for yourself.

You know what's really awesome about guns? For the first time in years, I actually have a ton of things I really need for Christmas! I can actually make a wish list this year!

Be careful with that. I just logged onto Midwayusa for "a few small things" and before I knew it, I had a $286 checkout going.

Also keep in mind with guns and gun accessories almost everyone has ####### they've put on their gun, taken off, put back on, liked, didn't like, didn't fit, etc. Find your local "gun site" and paruse the for sale section. You can usually find some good deals on stuff or, at the very least, find someone that'll let you try theirs out.

Yeah...this is purely special situation SHTF ammo for when it really counts. I'm going to load up on the best cheapo stuff I can find that won't damage my gear.

No.

No joke there. I just went there for 10 PMAGs and came out with a loader/unloader and 2 gun bags too. Good prices though! I've gotta find some cheaper hobbies. I've been into computers for about 30 years...probably bought 15-20. Been into guitar for about 25 years...collected so much gear I could open my own shop! Then last year got into cameras and spent about $3k on that. And now guns...a virtually limitless landscape of goodies. I guess that's why people open gun stores, eh? hehehe

Well, when you get into another hobby and you're ready to move those beautiful specimens you just acquired, let me know.

That NEVER ends! Just when you get ALL the goodies, they make more! Some years ago I started collecting cartridges, much cheaper than the guns for them and I decided to "limit" myself to "American" cartridges. That is cartridges that were commerically produced by US companies, even though some may be "foreign in origon, if they are/were MADE here I collect them.

I thought that woul dbe a fairly simple endeavor...wrong! I can barely keep up with all the new ones they introduce and it seems the same way with accesories, etc.

OMG! That was great....was that from an actual conversation?!?

So what's the deal with PMAGs? They looked decent to me and relatively cheap...

If the S doesn't HTF, I'll look you up to sell my guns. If it does though, I'm going to make sure I hide in a different set of mountains far away from you...

I believe it...I was looking up ammo the other day and there were like 100+ pages of 5.56/.223 ?!? And that was just 1 website.

OMG! That was great....was that from an actual conversation?!?

I don't know if it was an actual conversation but when you go to ar15.com and/or any other gun site you'll see all kinds of good information... and then a bunch of ####### like that. "Well, the SEALS are using this, so that's what I'm using too."

My favorite part is when he says, "you will be the #### in the brand new multicam BDUS, you will have scoliosis from carrying a bunch of sh!t, and your gun will be shiny, new and black." I wish I had a dollar for every person I've met who is now "ready" because they've read an internet forum and bought a bunch of stuff. This video (or maybe it was part II) details that nicely. "You can't even walk around the block."

I applaud anyone for trying to get more prepared, but people have to realize just because you have $5,000 worth of stuff, you're not necessarily "ready." That's why he tells him to bring a few steaks and more beer!

So what's the deal with PMAGs? They looked decent to me and relatively cheap...

The deal is you can get 3 GI mags for every PMAG.

Like every other "tacticool" piece of gear out there, it's something that someone on the internet said they liked and then many people bought into the hype. As a matter of fact, PMAG's slogan is, "believe the hype."

They are a good product. But I've never understood why someone would only buy 1/3 of what they can afford just because it's "cool" and someone on the internet said they liked them.

If the S doesn't HTF, I'll look you up to sell my guns. If it does though, I'm going to make sure I hide in a different set of mountains far away from you...

Sounds good!

As for hiding in the mountains, this is something I've considered deeply. Not which mountains and where, but what to do. Nobody has enough stuff to sustain indefinitely so do you "take" from others? Do you share and barter? Or, do you live minimally and keep to yourself?

Tough choices. I hope we never have to make them.

I'll be honest. I doubt I'll ever be ready. Probably most people won't. Most of us are just soft and it's going to be a complete shock when the great machine breaks down and we have to do things the hard way again. I'm just hoping to not be such a soft target. Kind of like outrunning the other guy when a bear is coming.

Yeah...if they were $50, I'd probably consider more carefully. But at $15 or so, I actually like them best and don't mind paying a little more...I even opted for the ones with the little windows to see how many bullets are left. In any case, I'm looking to get a variety...that way if something turns out to be a piece of ####### it won't be a weak link.

Sounds good!

I think long-term though the best option would be a farm...some place out away from any population centers. I'd be in the live minimally and keep to myself camp as I think that's safest. Maybe once things settle down that would change. If the farm thing doesn't work...we'd probably head back to our roots in Kentucky...we still have relatives that live way out in the boonies where the roads still aren't paved and they pump their own water.
