Since we're posting links and stuff now... here's a really interesting one written by a dude that survived the fall of the Soviet Union and then applied his observations to America. I can't remember if I read this here in the RUB forum or got it off one of my survival/prep boards. Anyway, here it is - Comparative Analysis

On mounting optics - A mechanical zero and good mount will get you pretty close on most models. Boresighting is good too, but requires a boresight or some time to look, crank, look, crank, adjust, look. Just a pita and you're still not all the way there.

We teach at Appleseeds a method we call IMC for "inches, minutes, clicks" where we actually take folks through the simple math necessary to make sight corrections. The easiest way to make sure you get your POA/POI lined up is shoot a sighter group, measure it in inches, convert that to minutes of angle, and then apply the necessary clicks of adjustment to your sights.

Believe it or not, I can take just about any rifle with any kind of sights and zero that sucker in about two minutes. I can also do it with very little ammo. If any of you would like to learn that very valuable skill, sign up for an Appleseed event.

Wow...scary (but accurate) stuff, and from 2006 no less. We are really going to be in deep S! One of my buddies bought 300 acres of farmland for this very reason...he said it's tough work (he and his brothers are doing all the farming) but they are self-sufficient now and will have it paid off soon as they are selling surplus. He's super prepared....not surprising that he's 27 and done 5 tours already. I'm so not cut out to be a farmer lol...but really thinking hard about it. At this point, I'm really wanting to pay the penalties and get my retirement money out early and get it into tangible things just like the guy in your link says....he's dead on on that. The US dollar is going to be worth less than toilet paper.

Man, I don't know jack about sighting lol. We really need to do some Appleseeds.

The US house of Representative today passed a bill to require states to honor ohter states concealed carry licenses. At one time that bill included a clause to recognize the drivers licens of states with "constitutional carry" such as Vermont, as a concealed license. It now goes to the Senate and then Obama?

Unless attached to something Obama really wants, I do not see him signing it. For some reason it would not apply to Illinois and Washington DC, perhaps because those jurisdictions have NO concealed carry of any type.

If it passes the Senate Obama will have no choice but to sign it. Both houses approve. The people have spoken.

As "left-leaning" as Obama claims to be, he's been pretty conservative on guns and stuff. I think he knows if he touches the guns that'll alienate his slightly left of center folks. In the mean time, he'll just keep up with the illegal programs that he claims he doesn't know about and keep fingers crossed that Hillary will get the UN to ban our guns for us. "My hands are tied. The UN has passed a binding resolution. Turn in your guns."

Cold dead fingers.

And yes, because Illinois and Washington DC (two models of how effective gun control can be - no gun crimes!) have no concealed carry statutes, they will have no reciprocity. It's been widely whispered Illinois will get CC in the next year or two. Every year it's closer and closer to getting on the ballot. DC? Not a chance. Too many politicians!

The writing is on the wall. So many people want to say it's not coming or it won't happen... the folks who've been through it all agree. It will happen. And it will be catastrophic because of how we're set up.

Beans and bullets. I actually have a picture on my facebook page that says "401k shmoroonekay" because a folder with papers in it is going to get you absolutely nothing once the lights go out. A box of bullets, on the other hand, will be priceless!

Man, I don't know jack about sighting lol. We really need to do some Appleseeds.

I'd recommend heading over to the Appleseed forum and getting signed up, reading a little, and then heading to an event once your rifles show up. I'd also recommend getting a few .22LR set up for practice. You can really hone the fundamentals using a .22LR and save a ton of money. At Appleseed we use what's called the "Liberty Training Rifle" or LTR for short. It's a great way to get a lot of practice and trigger time in without breaking the bank.

Plus, they're nice to have for small game and just a spare rifle laying around. (So what if someone's only shooting .22 at you. They're still shooting at you!)

I must have picked a crappy host...I was too lazy to use one where you had to register first. I'll fix it later tonight...going to the shooting range after work.

Without rule of law in the US is in the air. The Occupy Wall Street anarchists causing chaos, the antique power grid, a nuclear disaster waiting to happen, another Katrina/earthquake type natural disaster. Campus slaughters, etc. etc. Politics has no civility and they will do ANYTHING to win. There were military units during Katrina that refused to disarm the citizenry as they considered it against the Constitution. Just where the military might fall amid domestic chaos is not clear to me. Especially if given orders that could be seen as illegal. (Google "Oath Keepers"...no, not The Promise Keepers, very different group).

Neighborhoods will need to become militias and do patrols and road blocks. If you think of the kind of looting and crime that occurs in small disasters, think about a big boy hitting. Recently, I've been gearing up my Remington 870 with a sling and light. Got my sidearms but need a rifle. Debating whether to go with a "pistol round" rifle like the Kel-Tec Sub-2000 in 9mm (I like those 32 round Glock mags it can use) or the Kel-Tec SU-16 Charlie in .223. In neighborhood fighting, I think the 9mm rifle with a bunch of 30 round mags would be good, light, and uses reasonably priced and available ammo.

For 150 meters and out the SU-16C is the ticket. I've already shared my issues with black rifles and can't afford a M-14 civilian model and the .308 ammo.

One guy I'll be trying to find when the SHTF occurs is the guy with a Barrett 50 cal. sniper rifle. Oh yeah...

going to the shooting range after work.

Those will probably be mechanically zeroed already. Just need to tweak them for your personal use.

On the 6920, clockwise = rt/up, c/clockwise = lf/dn. You should zero at 25 meters (82 ft.) with the elevation drum on the rear set at 6/3 + 1 click (that would be one click toward the 4) and don't touch it again. Only use the front sight for your elevation changes. Rear drum on the side for windage. Once you're zeroed, put that rear elevation drum 1 click BEFORE the 3/6 and you'll be battle sight zeroed for 275 meters.

With that setting, you can aim center mass at anything from point blank range to about 350 meters and hit it in the vitals. You'll also be able to use that rear drum for it's intended use. Target at 500m? Simply click the wheel up to 5 and you're good to go. 425? Go about two clicks past the 4 and you'll hit it.

They made it Army proof. (No offense, charles!)

I personally believe something like that will send the military home in droves and they won't be organized anyway. Gotta get back home.

We saw in Katrina they had to bring in "outside" Guard units to disarm the people. The locals wouldn't do it. I think the same will happen after SHTF.

Yep. If you're going to be primarily doing short range stuff the carbines will work just fine. It will be nice to stock only one caliber as well.

For 150 meters and out the SU-16C is the ticket. I've already shared my issues with black rifles and can't afford a M-14 civilian model and the .308 ammo.

The SU-16C is a cool little platform but if you're going to get a rifle... why not get a rifle? The M-1A is too expensive, I'll agree with you but a pretty decent value in .308 is the Mini-30. (And Mini-14 in .223) It's not going to get you sub-MOA accuracy like the others but it's "minute of man" and you'll find the controls rather familiar. They can be had for around $650 used and that's only about 1/2 the cost of a M-1A.

I had a Mini-14 with a folding stock on it. Great little rifle. Light, accurate enough, and plenty of fire power. I paid $500 for the thing and it had a red dot scope on it already. If you won't do a black rifle (and I still think you'd be OK if you toyed with the modern versions) Minis are the way to go.

One guy I'll be trying to find when the SHTF occurs is the guy with a Barrett 50 cal. sniper rifle. Oh yeah...

I almost bought one of those a few years ago. Added to the cart and then found out there was an 18 month wait due to backorder. I decided to invest that $8500 on alcohol and women instead.

I still kick myself for not getting that thing. But, they say memories are priceless. I can put a price on mine!

Since I already had most of my stuff before I got the new family.......my really reach out and touch someone favorite is my

Remington 700 PSS (.308) with Harris folding bipod and big (can't remember the numbers) Leupold scope.

Definately is limited by the shooter's skills!!! 600 yards is a piece of cake and 1000 yards always on target.

The Barret is an awesome machine. Awesome. I do not have one, I wish I did, it would be WAY on the top of my list but I should have bought one when I was single and they cost $3500

Same here. I remember being very close to popping for one a few years back.

I also have almost ordered an Ohio Ordnance BAR !!

For the first one, one decision maker was the thought, "Oh #######, now I gotta horde up on 50 cal!"

Here's some stock photos that are very close to my Remington 700 PSS setup.

I do have the SS barrel, flip-up scope covers, bipod and sling.

Sweet and very accurate out of the box. In .308, I purchased it NIB and have only sent about 300 rounds downrange.

I could do it actually. I could swap off a few of my Winchesters and buy one but which ones? I sold off a lot of military rifles maybe 15 years ago and got into the Winchesters and S&Ws after inheriting a few. I cannot sell those as they are family items but after collecting these I do not want to trade them off. :( I mean I have no need for a Barrett more than I need these others. I do have a Sharps Long Range Express but to be honest, it CAN reach out there but I need PRECISE range estimation beyond 300 yards on a man sized target. If you hit them it will knock the dogsh*t out of them. It cannot compete with a modern .50 BMG or even a .308

the BAr is an awesome rifle also, though much less so as a semi-auto. As a semi-auto it is no better than the M1A, maybe worse accuracy wise. But for a 20 shot .30-06 semi-auto it cannot be beat. They are just awesome

Phil, you HAVE to get yourself down to Louisville for the second weekend in April and go to the machine gun shoot at Knob Creek Gun Club. You can try all these guns there, full auto versions, and rip up some cars with a real BAR! They also have M2 .50s, Quad .50s, mini guns, flame throwers, machine guns and SMGs of all types. It is a GAS!!!!!
