There seems to be a flood of these sawed-off rifle "pistols" available now. My favorite local gun shop even has a few types of lever action "pistols" which are no more than lever action rifle with short barrels and cut off stocks. If you do this yourself and convert what WAS a rifle, you are in big time trouble and your home will be subject to the Ruby Ridge/Waco treatment. If they are made this way at the factory, they are just "pistols" and sold as handguns. Interesting.

Yep. These are a great example of "common-sense" gun laws. I'm not allowed to have loaded magazines for a rifle with a short barrel on it but I can 100% legally CONCEAL a "pistol" that shoots the exact same rounds, takes the exact same ammo, will do the exact same thing (close up, anyway) that it's bigger brother would do.

Makes a lot of sense to me.

In truth, I don't think they fully understand the way the law is worded. If they did, this would be gone in a second. But, coming from folks who think a barrel shroud is something that goes on your shoulder, I don't think we have much to worry about.

I am still not convinced places like "Gunbroker" are good. On the one hand I can do a search for a particular gun and find them easily, on the other hand, it seems like all the pawn shops are doing this now, selling online as well as in their store, and the price goes up!

I keep an eye on Craigslist for accessories and stuff and then I check Swapgiant for the firearms themselves. Online classifieds are great places to score deals. There are also a couple "for sale" sections on gun sites I check daily but the thing about people on gun sites is they know exactly what the stuff is worth and all too often they're more inclined to hold out for a better offer. The only time I can score big on those is when people need cash for bills or something unexpected comes up. "I need a new roof so this one's gotta go."

Bud's pretty much sets the standard for firearms prices and AIM does the same for ammo.

You need to PM this post to Rob.

He'd sh!t his pants! In actuality, he'd talk about how nobody needs a gun like that, especially criminals. But, it's OK for military or law enforcement to have them though.

Not legal in California.

And to entice Slim, and everyone else, here's my two Rock Island 1911s.

Man, those sure are sweet!

I still prefer the double stacks but I may just have to come around to the singles. Really, do you need more than 8rds of .45? If it's worked for our boys all throughout history it should work fine for me too.

Thanks for the link. I'll definitely check that out as well.

I have told Alla I will put together a shooting outfit for her and next spring she can enter some of the fun matches at our club. They have .22 "gopher shoots" where they shoot at the heads of bowling pins at ranges out to 100 yards. Ought to be just up her alley. They also have .22 silhouette matches

I just recently joined a club. I've never really been into "club activities" but the more and more I visit these clubs with Appleseed the more I see folks having fun and shooting in competitions. Not that I'd really care about winning them but it's always fun to challenge yourself and those around you to see if you can perform under pressure.

As my old football coach used to say, "You'll never remember all those days sitting at home watching TV. But, you will remember getting out and doing stuff."

The club shoots are fun. I participate in skeet leagues and DCM matches. They have pistol matches in the winter at the indoor range. Alla is getting a lttle more confidence and will probably want to join in. She was intimidated by shooting without a rest and without scopes (DCM) but now is feeling more comfortable from sitting and prone position. She needs to understand that the standing targets are also a little easier, larger scoring rings etc. It really is not THAT hard. The silouhette matches are shot ALL from the standing position but the targets are relatively large and you only have "hit" them, it doesn't matter WHERE you hit them as long as they fall over.

Our shoots give out small medals for 1st-3rd place, no big deal. The skeet league actually gives out trohies at a league dinner. The dinner is great!

Glad you joined a club, they have been a lot of fun for me over the years.

That's the beauty of shooting; it's not that hard!

I'm looking forward to it. This club is about an hour away but my mom's house is halfway there so I'll have a decent excuse to stop over on my way back through plus a place to crash for the two day events.

Yep, it's all about breathing and muscle relaxation.....

Relax

Breathe in, hold, and breath out half way and stop

Squeeze fully

I shoot on empty lung since that's one less muscle I have to use. (And a lot less thinking!) Plus, the thing about half lung is... are you really half or are you 60%? Maybe 40%? Do you really know?

Consistency is key. Out is out. It's also a lot more relaxed. The other thing I really like about empty lung is my trigger control coincides with my breathing. Breathe in = trigger forward. Reset and start to exhale. Breathe out = trigger squeeze. Empty/relax, empty/relax, emptBOOOM! Ride out the recoil, inhale = trigger forward....

It's a zen-like experience! I actually draw it out on a piece of paper when I'm instructing shooters. It's a wave pattern of consistency!

Finally last night got around to putting a cheap sling on my backyard 22 (Czech BRNO Model1)and while practicing with it determined that indeed, I do almost fully exhale and you're correct, consistency and zen focus is the key.

Dry Fire Practice is a great way to get breathing down. But, then again, if I had a backyard range, I'd never dry fire!

That Dragon's Breath looks way too fun! I bet it's kind of hard to remember to stop, drop, and roll after getting hit with something like that.

Finally ordered a Colt LE6920 and a Colt LE6940...still have to wait for them to get transferred to my local FFL dealer...it's driving me crazy! Any recommendations on a good place to buy bulk 5.56 NATO ammo? I'm curious how they ship ammo...with it being so heavy seems like that will add a lot to the cost.

Wife's visa journey:

03/19/07: Initial mailing of I-129F.

07/07/11: U.S. Citizenship approved and Oath Ceremony!

MIL's visa journey:

07/26/11: Initial mailing of I-130.

05/22/12: Interview passed!

Most ship via UPS and yes shipping costs will cost and figure that in when choosing a supplier.

AIM Surplus has good prices

Classic Arms can be competitive

Cheaper than Dirt also

Wideners also again.

Sweet! You'll be happy with both of those. Pics when you get 'em!

As for ammo, the sites Phil's mentioned are all good. I have a link I'll send you once I get home (I wanna say I posted it in this thread already) but it has an often updated deal finder for ammo. Typically I'll google it with "cost + shipping" as the selected option. The best deal I've seen recently was 420rds of M-855 in a .30cal can for $155 delivered.

Just a quick note on ammo - I have a few thousand NATO rounds for a rainy day but the bulk of my ammo is Silver Bear 62gr. BTHPs. My Colt LOVES that stuff!

There are debates all day long on whether you need 62gr or 77gr or if the 55gr is enough to get the job done. The fact of the matter is for SHTF purposes you need a bunch of ammo that you can shoot. So what if it doesn't penetrate 5/16" of hardened steel? It'll scare off the bad guys and that's good enough. I've found 55gr Wolf to be just as accurate as 62gr NATO (well, close enough, anyway) and unless you're worried about troops with body armor, I wouldn't even sweat the difference between 55, 62, 69, 77, 84, etc. Buy what's cheap and stack it deep!

Buy "some" NATO ammo, sure. But, "invest" in bulk ammo of any sort. As Gary pointed out a few pages back, someone can shoot better with a $400 gun and $800 of ammo than somone with a $1150 gun and $50 of ammo.

Will do! Yeah I just couldn't resist. Looks like they hold up value well, plus it sounds like they have stopped making them with the LE designation, so that can only help. It's an investment, right!!! =)

Awesome. Thanks a bunch! That's pretty reasonable.

I'll probably be getting a wide mix...I'm a bit partial to the higher gr stuff, but it all comes down to price! My only concern on the wolf is I've read it's a little harsher ammo....dunno if that is true or not.

Good advice and that makes a lot of sense! After talking to you guys a couple weeks ago I've been regularly hoarding every chance I get. Going to really stock up on mags as well per your advice...just makes good sense.

Thanks again!

10 years ago Wolf was #######. Today, they've fixed their quality problems and it's pretty good ammo at the best price available.

The die is cast.

I've spent every extra penny I have on prep stuff in the last month. It's not a question of "if" anymore.
