I would suggest universal health care to reduce costs by 10% and a stay at home military. Those two would cut enormous costs and make the US competitive again and able to afford education and teachers and police officers hence cutting the prison population by millions

I'm not fine with a government collapse, but then again, I have guns, I'm not all that worried. I think we need two new parties, one on the left and one on the right. The democrats represent center left, and republicans center right. The fringes on both sides are dragging each party into policy areas that they aren't exacly comfortable with. The resulting compromise will always leave everyone unsatisfied.

We will get a bandy legged, big buckled, swaggering Perry/Bush look alike who will go down while speaking in tongues at his mother of all prayer meetings

None of the serious republican candidates want to run. Despite his sagging numbers and waning support, Obama is still the incumbent, and as such a formidable opponant. Seems the republicans are headed for a schism, I just hope the old school pre 90's republicans don't all turn into teabaggers, we do need some responsible fiscal conservatives still.

If it wasn't for religious bias, Huntsman could do the job for the right. He is 10 times as clever and controlled and believable as Mitt Romney. He even called the pea-headed Texan preacher a 'moron' yesterday, so his judgement and concise vocabulary are also impressive. He is as right wing as anyone but he knows how to serve it up looking yummy. Thank goodness for us universal health care/medicare/social security people that he has no chance and the 2012 is over before it starts.

Only someone not aware of the true indebtness of this nation would think the "long term" deficit will be taken care of using the current approach of more spending and taxing or that adding more debt in the short term is not a big deal.

This is just more Keynesian economics, and how is that working out for the USA and the rest of the world?

The real deficit is much bigger than $14+ billion paraded before the public, that figure only accounts for the total or gross national debt as the sum of the debt held by the public and intragovernmental.

You may want to ignore the fiscal mess we're in and the federal government can leave things off the books...but the day to pay the piper will arrive.

The education deficit, the infrastructure repair deficit etc has not been built into the financial figures and that is certainly a big number

A company which did not account for 'depreciation' would not get its accounts approved

My concern is not with the ability of the economy to fix all these things but with the system of government which is unresponsive to being managed.

The UK has a small island with depleted natural resources and a dependency culture, but a superb parliamentary system of a virtually 'elected dictatorship' which is given its head and then judged every 5 years by the electorate. It has a safeguard built in and can be balanced and over-ruled by defections from the 'ruling party' but rarely is that necessary

If the territory of the US had such a system, the economy would be back on track in the first 5 years

Instead we have total paralysis which doesn't help anyone. Add religious mania and racism to the mix where Jews, Moslems, Mormons, black people etc are blocked and opposed simply on account of those attributes, and it becomes impossible to manage.

Britain has had a Jewish Prime minister and Woman Prime minister and a Bachelor Prime Mister who's programs went ahead with much opposition, and yet went ahead just the same.
