CR1 Social Number

Hi well I have finally made it into the US.

But now all the admin starts, to get our lives rolling.

I would like to get my social number as soon as possible. Will they send this directly to me or do I have to go to the office.

What are peoples experience with this?

Also, I would like to get a bank account setup and all other stuff like that. If i don't have a social number is it not possible to do this?

It has always been said that with the CR1/IR1 visa you can work and do everything immediately, it this strictly true? as you have to wait for things to arrive in the post?

Thanks

Wait two weeks to get into the system, print out your form, fill it out. See SSS site for details. Take all ID, passport, other immigration documentation. They will send you a card in about two weeks. http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5.htm

In Arizona its hot hot hot.

In our case John could be set up on my bank account without a social security number. They took a copy of his passport and then when he received his social security card we just updated it with the bank.

If you checked off for a SSN to be assigned to you on the DS-230, then wait a few weeks. If you don't receive anything in the mail after 3 weeks from POE, then head to your local SSA with the appropriate documents. This is what I had to do. Then, 10 days later, my SSN was in my hands.

As for the bank accounts, for my bank here at least, they didn't need a SSN to open. So, when I found this out, I had a checking and savings account, with a debit card, in my hands a few days after arriving in the US. The only thing you absolutely need a SSN that's bank-related is a credit card. You NEED a SSN for that. And when you do get your SSN, make sure you tell your bank so they can add it to your bank account(s) as they do need it, but not right away when you open it.

And you can work as soon as you have your SSN. The stamp in your passport acts as a temporary green card until the plastic card comes in the mail.
