Hello,

I am a US Citizen and I will be getting married to my Indian Citizen wife in Calcutta in Febraury. However, I can't find any information about registering for a Special Marriage Act wedding in Kolkatta. I found the Delhi information, but nothing on Kolkatta. Also, we live in Delhi, but are getting married in Kolkata. We are happy to file 30 days in advance, but don't know if getting married in another city/state will be a problem.

I'll stick with the registering the marriage at the local courts. It will be a good idea to find a lawyer who can help you with navigating the administrative paperwork.

"that man"..... Did you read your other post where I have replied to "get no objection certificate" from Embassy.

It will help you in a big way when applying for immigration for your wife.

Please let me know....

Hi Deep2009

I did see that. Is a No Objection Certificate from my embassy the same thing as the special marriage act through the Indian government? Or does getting that certificate just help me in dealing with the Indian authorities?

Thanks for the help.

No Objection certificate is not required anywhere in the process.

We never got No Objection certificate, it might be more handy if you have preivous divorce etc. if there is none then it is never used.

Documentation does say for one to have it but Indian authorities dont ask.

Hi all,

I have gotten in touch with the authorities in Calcutta, but they said that we cannot register our marriage there because we do not live there. So we will now do it in Delhi. We talked to a lawyer and he said it would cost 20,000 rupees!! That is just outrageous to me, as it is more than I paid to get my OCI and more than most people's salary in India. I was wondering if people had experience doing it here in Delhi. Did they use a lawyer, or did they register themselves? I have done other things in Delhi myself, like getting a birth certificate, and the fee is never more than 100 rupees. The jump from 100 to 20,000 is not OK with me.

Thanks for the help.

The lawyer knows you are from US and he as adjusted his fee as per that... :) Its unfortunate you will find all kind of lawyer from 5000 to 60,000 you will have to pick who you would be comfortable with and who you think would represent you correctly and get all your paper work done right.
