We have always had a regular Army. Whether or not that meets the standard of a standing Army I guess is subject to interpretation. Under the Articles of Confederation, the Revolutionary Army had to go hat in hand for all it needs. Under the Constitution, Congress has the authority to raise Armies, and pay for them, one year at a time.

I guess what I meant is the 2nd amendment is not about national security. The Supreme Court decides such things. They decided.

dude, you need to read it all again. the federalist papers arguing in support of the constitution in the form it exists in now considered "enemies foreign, and domestic". (the fed papers were published in periodicals to coerce recalitrant representatives to sign on under pressure from their constiutuancy.) the right to keep and bear arms is clearly the final check and balance.

Really? Because the guys who wrote it had done just that. Don't you think if they wanted to prohibit the populace from having the means to do so they would've stopped ownership of "military grade" weaponry right then and there? Wouldn't they have used some different language?

The way they put it on paper it's designed to do exactly that - ensure a free state. They knew an armed population is the key deterrent to tyranny. The fact of the matter is the founders had just finished overthrowing their own government and set out to ensure their posterity had the means to do so as well.
