If My mom is on my Dad (the sponsors) Tax Forms

She doesnt work so she is only on my dads tax forms. Does she need a i864a or can I just ignore her name on the tax forms?

It's unlikely that your mom would need to complete an 864A. A consular officer may ask for one only to be sure that your mom is aware of the sponsorship commitment. This has occurred with a few VJ members.

Depends on whether Dad is "employed" or self employed. If self employed, yes, have Mom provide an I-864a. If Dad is employed, use one or more complete tax returns instead of tax return transcripts. That will assure that his W2 forms show the income is all his.

Really? I'm sure my dad files joint taxes and my dad is self-employed and he will be my sponsor. Why would mom file an I-864A if she has no income? I could have her do one just to be sure, but I just think that's strange since mom is a career housewife.

Lots of things seem strange in this process. I expect your Mom signed the mortgage papers too.

The reason Mom gets involved is that for a self employed sole proprietor or partnership, it is not clear that the income is specific to an individual, where income on a W2 IS clearly attributable to an individual.

Here's something else that will seem strange. When you fill out your own I-864, you will not place a 1 in the box for spouse, even though you have one. Look at the affidavit carefully and you'll see why.
