Birth certificates don't exist in Korea. Instead they have what is called a 호적등본 (hoh jeok deung bohn) which is a document showing a family tree. The whole family uses the same document. Should this be translated and attached in place of a birth certificate?

My fiance was born in Thailand but never had his birth registered. What he'll do is to go the (um pur) or township/city officer to get a letter that says his birth was never registered, has a couple witnesses and the township officer. I think that might be the thing you have to do too?

Let's see what other people might say....

Hi there,

I have the same problem.

I called Thai Consulate to ask about the BC and they told me that Thai Gov did not issue BC to persons born in refugee camps.

I kept searching and found out that all you have to do is get the Korean Gov to send you a letter saying that your Birth certificate is unavailable because they do not issue BC, instead they issue the family tree thing.

Then have your parents write a letter stating that you are their child and that you were born in Korea.

I wrote a post up here for others in my situation.

Hope this helps. If not contact me and I will find you the link.

:)

Good Luck!

Always be grateful, thankful and appreciate what you have.

How to Obtain a South Korean Birth Certificate

A birth certificate in South Korea is called a family census register or family relation register. This birth certificate usually includes the child's full name, gender, place and time of birth, and parent's names. The family relation register is filed at the city division or ward where a family lives. With a little preparation, you can obtain a copy of the certificate.

Difficulty:

Moderate

Instructions

1

Determine the city division or ward in South Korea where the family is registered. The city of Seoul is divided into 25 wards or administrative divisions. The ward is determined by the area of Seoul in which the family resides.

2

Obtain the mailing address for the specific ward by contacting the Korean Embassy or your local Korean Consulate. You can find the contact information for your local Korean Consulate by visiting Dynamic-Korea.com and clicking on the link for consulate service.

3

Write a request to the ward for a copy of the family relation register. As of 2010, processing fees for the family relation register are $3 USD. Your request must be in Chinese or Korean and include the name of the family's head of household and permanent Korean address. If you do not speak Chinese or Korean, seek the help of a professional translation service, such as the KIN Translation Group, which specializes in Korean translation. Language school professors might also be willing to assist you.

Korea has gone thru chances in regard to family registry. Now they're broken down into separate documents.

so for birth certificate

(1) Identification certificate (기본증명서) ________

(2) Family relation certificate (가족관계증명서) ________

or

( this contains everything and detailed and this contains all the information needed)

(4) Old Family Census Register

(해당되는 경우 제적등본 ) ________

I found this topic to be confusing as well because there are so many ppl tell you other stuff. Some will say u need all three, some say u only need 2, some say u need certified some say copies will suffice.
