The hiring or not hiring of an attorney is depending on your situation!

If you have a straight forward case (fiancee with clear police record, no immigration problems to US, no or clear divorce, etc.) and both of you are willing to deal with the paper work, you read the guides and you understand what you need to do, then you probably don't need an attorney.

Also read what will be involved after your fiancee is here in the states (getting SSN number, opening joint bank account, adding her as beneficiary to your life insurance, adding her to the lease, utility bills, etc) to already prepare for what is necessary for AOS (Adjustment of Status) which you need to file after getting married. Also find out about jobs if necessary, etc. There is alot you can do ahead of time which will make the process of moving and adjusting easier!

We hired an attorney for the I-129 (he was not expensive), also to have somebody look over the paperwork. He only filled out the papers according to our input. We did not use him at the embassy stage, nor AOS, nor ROC. The guides here give sound advice on what to do.

Wishing you luck!

Sib

Thanks for all the advice, After reading into it, I think I can do this on my own.... Well with a little help from you all as well

thanks again

Git 'er done! DIY is the way to do this. All of the legwork is on you, only to give it to a lawyer to submit, which is what YOU can do. Just a middleman to take up more time and money. You need an attorney in the court of law, not for this process. HERE, you just need patience! Welcome to the Journey!

On my signature, you can find some links that are well worth reading for proceeding with the K1. Just take the time to read all of the instructions ahead of time and plan well ahead. Try to stay ahead of the game instead of getting behind.

You can do it....!!!

Congratulations and good luck....

You definitely do not need a lawyer. However, why not get married in Russia and do a CR1 visa? It's cheaper I've heard.

The K-1 is faster, not much but a bit. Plus, Im not sure I want to deal with ZAGS

True that :) I would know, lol. Agree with everyone on the attorney. There's really no reason at all to hire one unless your beneficiary has been in trouble with US Immigration law in the past and from what I have seen it just complicates things that much more. Just do your homework here on this site and read all the government forms very carefully and you'll be fine.

Good luck!! Follow the guides and once you file, follow the timelines of fellow VJ members who sent their applications close to yours, it'll help you feel more sane to know at least an estimated timeline. Good luck and congratulations on the engagement :D

Congratulations!

As long as your case is pretty straightforward, I wouldn't waste the money on an attorney. Just follow the Guides here and frontload as much info as you can.

Best of luck to you both.

Hi all

Just found VJC yesterday and all the info here has been very helpfull. I have met three times with my fiance, twice in Russia and one time in Spain. Just popped the question to her on 10-2-2011 while in Gran Canaria Spain))))))). Now I get to start the K-1 jorney. I am in the prosses of getting things together but am stil on the wall on wether I should do it myself or hire an imigration attorney. Part of me just wants the peace of mind to let sombody else handle all the paperwork. Any imput would be helpfull. Thanks.

Hi, I wish you good luck with your process. I scrutinized my k-1 application and made sure all the T's were crossed and the I's were dotted. It took me a GOOD 2 months to ensure ALL of the documents were in place, and making sure each questions were answered. You will have to take the time to do this each night, go through a checklist and review notes on VJ. I did all this without an attorney. In fact, I had an attorney tell me I need to show proof of financial support. That was it. It took me a while longer to realize the "financial support" statement was to actually fill out another IMPORTANT part of the k-1 process.

So, you need all the time to make sure you do this right. I was never RFE'd.

Sincerely, E

I was just like you about 5 months ago. I was going to meet with the attorney on Monday morning and found this site on Saturday morning. I can tell you I saved 2500 dollars from this site and the many wonderful helpful people here.

My k1 was approved "without a hitch"

also, good luck on your journey
