are there any risks with applying to DV lottery? I am supposed o have an H1b visa petitioned for me by another company in February 2012. If I apply now for DV lottery might it be that the H1b will be denied because this way I show the immigration intent? Is it safe for people that know that are applying for visas to apply fr DV?

The H1B visa legitimately implies the "dual intent", so entering in a visa lottery should not be a problem for the H1B process.

No risk for H1B, but after you apply, you can forget about travel or student visas.

Yep. H1-1b is dual intent, meaning they won't turn you away if you show the slightest intent to immigrate.. Like applying for DV lottery.

There have been many cases of student and tourist visas being denied though for that very reason.

you are wrong, DV program has nothing to do with the other visa, any consulate has no clue if you applied for the DV program. I am talking from experience. they will know only if you were selected and u filed your petition.

But most visa applications will ask if you have ever applied for a US visa before. But then I'm not very knowledgable of the DV visa, and so I'm not sure if "signing up" is equal to "applying. but I would guess that it is.

Entering the DV lottery is not seen as applying for an immigrant visa as you are effectively only applying for an opportunity to apply for a visa. Only if you get selected in the lottery and submit the next set of forms is it seen as applying for a visa. Edited by Superkruz
