Just a thought -- let's say we forced the recovering heroin addict I once saw to have her baby. Let's assume the baby is born addicted -- are all the swarms of pro-life troops going to adopt a baby with an addiction? Don't hold your breath. Are they going to offer welfare and assistance to the child to help it grow up normally? Are they going to volunteer their time and money to ensure its well-being? I'm pretty sure the people who want to make abortion illegal are the same ones making cuts in social welfare programs, espcially those they consider to be cause by someone's poor choices in life, regardless of whether or not this effects innocent children

Some more detailed statistics reveal a very different picture:

Abortion Statistics - Decisions to Have an Abortion (U.S.)

25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing.

21.3% of women cannot afford a baby.

14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child.

12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy.)

10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career.

7.9% of women want no (more) children.

3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health.

2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health.

Abortion Statistics - Using Contraception (U.S.)

54% of women having an abortion said they used some form of contraception during the month they became pregnant.

90% of women who are at risk for unplanned pregnancies are using contraception

8% of women having an abortion say they have never used contraception.

It is possible that up to 43% of the decline in abortion from 1994-2000 can be attributed to using emergency contraception.

Source

And just a further comment on statistics:

Statistics:

most abortions are not due to rape nor incest:

- There have been 45 million abortions in USA since 1973.

- 95% cited social reasons ,"concerned about how baby could change her life, can't afford a baby now, unready for responsibility, etc.". (In a survey conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute, a research arm of Planned Parenthood, of why 1,900 women aborted their child).

- Only 1% cited fetal abnormality, rape or incest as a reason for her abortion... but fetal abnormality is the reason for the 99% of these 1% abortions...

I took only the most basic of stats courses and learned that one of the most basic principles when interpreting stats is that sample size makes a big difference. So while the 45 million is a pretty large number, 95% of 1900 surveyed is not indicative of anything, especially when you consider the vast gap between 1900 people and their 95% of reasons versus 45 million (less 1900) who are not part of this sample.

Just trying for perspective here.

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

I do know that their are a lot of children in foster homes/care who fit that description that have problems finding an adoptive home, yes. It's called working in social services, not being god.

Who made you god and you KNOW they wouldn't?? My cousin has adopted TWO babies addicted to crack. A man that works for me just adopted a baby whose mother was a heroin user. You don't know. You assume people are as cold hearted as say you? You don't know that!!

Yes. I love it. I can be called a "Jesus Freak" and an idiot (just read from the beginning of the thread, but if I reply to someone who claims--maybe with out calling me cold hearted, that I am...that there is no way in hell that pro-lifers give a damn about life other than their "agenda" you better believe I will stand up and say something. The world is FULL of loving people that want to give homes to babies that are not wanted by their natural parents. It happens every day. It saddens me to think that in this woman heart that SHE herself doesn't feel some pitty and want to do something herself. So what about those parents who are trying so hard to have children of their own who can't get pregnant? It takes years to adopt a baby, when millions of infants are being killed every day... Rape and incest victims aside, these women who are having abortions chose to have sex, and we all know what can be a consequense of that. Why is it so horrible to carry a child to term and give it up for adoption? You all talk about rights, but what about the rights of the unborn child?

edit: so maybe the millions killed every day is a rather large exaggeration (sp)..

anyways.. plenty of parents are quite willing to give a loving home to those babies who are being aborted due to financial reasons.. and plenty are also likely willing to pay the hospital bills etc that would come from carrying that child to term.. being unable to afford the baby is not a good excuse at all for an abortion

ADOPTED CHILDREN IN THE UNITED STATES

About 127,000 children were adopted in the U.S. in both 2000 and 2001. The number of adoptions each year hasn't really changed since 1987.

119,000 = Number of children waiting to be adopted on September 30, 2003.

8.6 years old = Average age of a child waiting to be adopted.

Approximately 3.65 years = Average amount of time a child waits to be adopted.

28,840 = Number of children in the U.S. who have been waiting five years or more to be adopted.

In 2000, there were half as many adopted children in American households as stepchildren. There were a total of 2.1 million adopted children, while there were 4.4 million stepchildren.

http://www.pobronson.com/factbook/pages/20.html

why are all these children still waiting? if there are so many ppl who want to take care of those poor, forgotten ones? thats why i say that all those who are so militantly anti-abortion (pushing it on others) should put their money where their mouths are and adopt a child...

there is nothing horrible about giving a child up for adoption... i would suggest that as a possibility to anyone who didnt want to keep a child, for whatever reasons... but it is only one possibility...

My body, my business. Period.

But what about the child's body?

We covered that a while back. Look for AS's post with link. There's no telling when it starts to be the child's body. Also earlier, there was a post pointing out that there's indeniably no viability outside the womb whatsoever prior to week 23. Did you miss those posts?

I never called you a name I presented an argument - you didn't like it so you called me "cold-hearted".

I guess I am cold hearted, I no longer work in a field I once felt deeply committed to because I always felt like I was shovelling against the ###### trying to make a difference because there are so many children that have been thrown away AFTER they are born, and the social problems this creates is depressing. The troops of pro-lifers facing up to this is, at best, minimal. At least I tried................

Why does it affect you what anyone else does with their body, MissLiss? What difference does it make to your life if somebody else has an abortion? In real terms, it makes more of a difference to you if nobody has an abortion, in the wider sense.

That's what I don't understand about this whole thing. Why the desire to get that involved in someone else's life? Why not live as you feel is right, and let others do the same?

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

errr...wha??? I don't recall robinlake calling you a Jesus Freak, and I don't get the impression she was calling you cold hearted. *confused*

Well, if the world is full of loving people waiting to adopt...why aren't they? You can't dispute the fact that they ARE NOT adopting...read Keltic's statistics.. can't be bothered to quote them, since I'm not sure you will really read them.

I have a boatload of respect for "this woman", if you are referring to robinlake who worked in the social services system and had to see the difficulties surrounding not just abortion, but other women's issues on a day to day basis. I think she did a hell of a lot and doesn't think she needs to justify not adopting the children she has seen in the system... but you let us all know when you adopt and we'll be very happy for you.

I personally know 2 women who were raped and as a result became pregnant. One chose to keep her child. The other chose to give the child up for adoption. Both women are extremely happy with their choices and with their families. In fact the one who chose to keep her child was in my college speech class. She gave her persuasive speech on pro-life. And ended with. "I don't think abortion should ever happen--even with a rape. I was raped 2 years ago. And this is my son." She showed us his picture. Pretty powerful and nobody could argue against her.
