These threads make me SICK. They way that people comment about lives of babies like a burden, a bother. It is disgusting and SAD. The rape/incest argument is so rediculous. That isn't the issue. Millions of babies are killed-not because women have been raped, but because of an unplanned pregancy. I wish people would claim responsibility for their actions. Rape and incest victims are few and far between in this issue-- and with reguard to that, two wrongs don't make a right. That child is being punished for someone elses crime--talk about an innocent victim of crime. Now with abortion of a child conceived of rape now makes two vicitms. That isn't a solution.

And allowing a woman to be hacked up by some back-street butcher makes me SICK!

i agree sister fraces..i am old enough to remember where there was an illegal operation ran by a nurse and the effects on the women helath wise years later...

That is what I did! NEVER will I have an abortion. Its is so sad. I don't know where I stand with the whole rape issue... it's still abortion and an innocent baby still suffers. I think adoption no matter what.

I think you'd be surprised at the number of people who can say with all their convictions that they wouldn't have one themselves, but still believe that it is an individual choice. And yes, it IS sad...I don't think many women who choose abortion find it an easy, happy go lucky, carefree decision. Quite the opposite.

Also, as Fischkoepfin rightly pointed out...

....an embryo is NOT a baby NOR a child. It's also NOT a fetus.

what if your daughter is raped and then has an unwanted pregnancy? Would she be "Stupid" then?

You can play "What Ifs" all day, but generally there is an exception written into the law for that. The South Dakota is the first time I have heard a state banned all abortions and that isn't going to happen in NY, MA, MD and other state's I can't think of at the moment, so if someone is dead set on having a safe abortion it will be avaliable. Might be somewhat of an inconvenience, but maybe it should be. Shouldn't be as easy as going to the dentist to have a tooth pulled.

Hopefully, we have raised our daughter to not be stupid enough to have an unwanted pregnancy. I'm not totally against abortion, but there is NO constitional right to have one. It should be a state's decision to place whatever restrictions they deem necessary on having one.

You think "stupidity" is the only reason to have an unwanted pregnancy?

People who think it can never happen to them are exactly the people who should not be making laws about this subject. I'm sorry, I won't tolerate the idea that every unplanned pregnancy is the result of poor planning or ignorance. Many, many are. Many aren't. And the burden most often falls on the people who can afford it the least: people who are already poor, exploited, abused, and/or terrified.

And if they do bear those children, they bring them into a world that is only too happy to place them in substandard housing, send them to failing schools, and prepare them for futures that include only menial work--if they're lucky and don't wind up in prison or dead first.

Look, if we had a society that welcomed the children of the poor with open arms, that was willing to do whatever it took to raise up the children of poor and/or abused mothers to good, whole lives, I would be happy to support the idea of eliminating abortion. We don't live in that society and we're not likely to anytime soon.

I believe I have answered the question. If that happens, most state's will probably have an exception written into their law for that and you can count on abortions be avaliable in DC, MA, NY and MA.

Would like to know the statistics for the reason an abortion was performed and I bet an abortion being done due to a rape is a very rare occurrance compared to the "I screwed up and don't want the baby" reason.

And it's gonna get worse, a lot worse, before enough people wake up and see the American Taliban for what it is and send them where they belong - onto the garbage pile of history.

Then it will get better.

the question was put to you as you defined ANY unwanted pregnancy as being "stupid". Maybe in your perfect world people do not make mistakes, but the planet I live on has many people that make mistakes. There are so many circumstances that you are refusing to even consider... And again, if it's not your body who gave you the right to decide what's going to happen to it?

I was going to stay out of this, but this statement made ME sick. Have you ever been raped? Do you know what that feels like? Then throw a pregnancy as a result on top of that feeling? Rape and incest victims are not as few and far between as you'd like to think. I know most people won't talk about it, but I can guarantee there is at least one person in this forum that has been raped. Whether it be date rape or rape by a stranger... it's more common than you think.

I'm a mother of 2 and am pregnant with my third child... I've had 2 miscarriages, one of them resulting in the loss of a tube and me almost bleeding to death. However, I support a woman's right to chose whether or not she has an abortion.

There are so many situations that you obviously have not even dreamed out that would influence a decision to have an abortion. If it's not you or your decision, you have no right to judge those who make the decision.

thank you faith... that post you replied to made me want to vomit... i WAS raped... i DID get pregnant from it... i had to face those questions of what to do... i had to decide if i could look at a child every day and see the face of the man who raped me... would it be fair to that child? would i resent the baby? if i gave it up for adoption, would there be someone who would actually take my child in? i decided that i would have the child anyway... but then it was taken out of my hands, as i had a miscarriage at almost 4 months...

what i would like to see is... all those who are so adamant about how abortion should NEVER be allowed... all those who say that those who have one were 'stupid' or 'irresponsible'... all those who try to scare women with pictures of the aborted fetus (as if vivid memories of being raped werent bad enough)... all those who deem themselves worthy to judge others... how many children have THEY adopted to help the situation... how many children have they helped to get out of foster homes or state homes? where is their compassion for the human who is stuck in a position to be an incubator against her will?

no, every abortion is not for a child of rape or incest... but unless you bother to talk to someone, how do you know their circumstances? i do not believe in abortion being the ultimate answer to all these problems... but i do believe that if you educate women without trying to scare or humilate them... perhaps they will make the right choice for their own lives...

if you believe it is murder, then dont have one yourself... raise your child to believe the same... but dont impose your beliefs on another... until you have walked a mile in their shoes, you have NO WAY TO UNDERSTAND

and only then, will you find the meaning of happiness."

And again this isn't having a tooth pulled and at some point in the pregnency what you want to get rid of may be a child, so what what gives you the right to end a child's life?

Now I would be for the morning after pills being avaliable, since that stops things long before someone needs to make the decision of what's being aborted is or isn't a child.

Well, see, that's the problem, mdyoung...the same people fighting to ban abortion are also supporting pharmacists and pharmacy chains who refuse to sell the morning-after pill. Even to rape victims. Yes, it has happened.

Thanks for posting that. I don't think I could ever be so brave.

That's the thing about these discussions...you never know who you could be talking about when you call unplanned pregnancies "stupid."
