It passed in South Dakota. Good for them! I hope other states follow suit

And I suppose YAY...back to the coat hanger for women in South Dakota...it's the first step. Because if you think abortion is REALLY going to go away, you are naive.

People called me naive to think it would pass, too. ;)

No, I KNOW there are plenty of people that wish to see things move back to the 50's...scary really.

And what I find the saddest thing of all, is that because of the South Dakota bill, we are potentially giving rapists parental rights to a child carried by the woman he has raped since the bill does NOT see rape or incest as a valid reason for an abortion. Don't think it can happen?....think again. Not only can a woman be violated once, but twice when the rapist comes along and says he wants the baby. THAT's disgusting. But hey....we've always known that some people would declare that woman's rights are secondary.

And before anyone harps on about the statistics of how many abortions are the result of rape or incest....in my mind, just ONE pregnancy is too many. Here...you've been raped, now carry that baby gosh dang it. :(

Moreover, the Legislature finds that the guarantee of due process of law under the Constitution of South Dakota applies equally to born and unborn human beings, and that under the Constitution of South Dakota, a pregnant mother and her unborn child, each possess a natural and inalienable right to life.

Your argument needs resolved in another manner.

Well as Frances has said....this isn't going to change the fact that unwanted/unplanned pregnancies will continue and abortions will carry on regrdless, whether it be 'backstreet' abortions or back to the hot baths and Gin. Surely THAT can't be good? Wonder if there will be even more babies abandoned after being born in secret....left to die in boxes in all kinds of weather.

Guess we will have to wait and see the consquences of this great traves........I mean, victory.

No, it does not need to be resolved in another manner. The constitution of South Dakota just proves that we have reached the point at which the unborn human beings are more important to the well-being of society as born human beings, or to put it in the context of a pregnancy, the life of the embryo is considered more important than the life of the mother. Interestingly enough, however, the embryo's natural and inalienable rights end once it is born because then it will become a second-class citiizen just like its mother.

It's called infantile citizenship because it molds the law according to the supposed needs of those who can't speak up for themselves rather than the needs of those who actually elected the legislature. Next thing you know there will be lawsuits against pregnant women on behalf of their embryos because the mothers are supposedly harming the fruit of their wombs by continuing to work or by not being able to afford prenatal vitamins...

I'm beginning to suspect that the constitution of South Dakota is actually unconstitutional. And I'm certain that I will live to see the day when it is finally shot down.

no surprise regarding south dakota..the Mississippi of the north//////..

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I'm just waiting for the day when my marriage to a person of another race is made illegal once again in Alabama and Mississippi and when the baby we are about to have is looked at as an abomination. That won't happen, you say? It would really seem that that's sure to follow as these holier than thou freaks are busy turning back time.

I wonder: Does this mean that pregnant women in South Dakota will forthwith receive state sponsored health care for the person they carry inside them? Or is that baby expected to provide for his/her own health care? Surely, the woman carrying the fetus doesn't have a thing to do with it...

So, the fetus is on it's own then, eh? Bright idea. Just like that law... ;)

And once again I am amazed by the lack of freedom that there is around here. There is a war going on for this purpose "only". To get them out from under the opresive sistem and make them a free country. Free like....whom?

For those who like to talk of how women just have abortion and could care #### about it I got news. We are all different. While some women indeed could care less about having another abortion on top of her other 10 she had, there are some that actually care . WOW,amazing huh?

Taking a particulsar case I point me not a friend, as many like to do. At this point of my life, no I'm in no position to bring a baby into the world. We live in rent,no job yet,no health insurance. My personal belief is that I SHOULD NOT give birth to a baby if i do not have the means to provide him or her a decent life. And that is because i"ve been on the poor side. And I know how hard it is on both parents and kids. And giving grandma and grampa as an example does not apply anymore. That was 1950 now is 2006. Things are way different so is society. If I do became pregnant will I imediate have an abortion? No. But I like to have the option. Yeah go on throw stones. But please let the one who's perfect throw first.

I see this law as a restriction. I used to live in comunism. Abortions were baned. We fought as a nation and became free. We are a democratic country now and abortions are not banned anymore. What is the message ?

Abortions will happen regardless.Banning them will only double the mortality rate.

Funny how those that never lived under repressive rule are those looking to impose such on people in a country that used to be the beacon of the free world. Used to be. It ain't nowhere near that position anymore. And not just because of what's being set in motion there in South Dakota.

CDCs 2002 Abortion Statistics

854,000 abortions

Reasons given for Abortions (may be biased)

Less than 2% due to rape

Read several pages back in this thread for a more detailed statistic that presents a different pictures. As you can find out in this thread there are many reasons to have abortions and just because you think it's bad doesn't mean that you can make the decision for me as well. I think driving is bad for you and your health and I still don't take the streets to outlaw it....

I'm actually pro-choice and do not care what you do with your body. Do I think abortion is generally ok? No, and it would not be a choice that would be acceptable for my family under most circumstances; however, there are circustances that abortion would be an option.

My concern is that arguments made for abortions are usually hidden behind a banner of rape or incest. Although there certainly are those cases, the majority are performed because of the girl/womans choice to engage in consensual sex. Unless you are very young, have a mental handicap, or you are just totally F*cking stupid you know that playing hide the wennie makes babies. If your choice results in an unwanted pregnancy and/or there are medical indications that require termination then you should have that right.

Reality is most WOMEN choose to have an abortion simply because they did not want to have a baby. That's ok, but BE HONEST about your decision and don't hide behind a serious issue like rape or incest because you take credibility away from those women who really did get pregnant because of it.

Make your choice but be honest as to the reason why, Champion the cause with integrity.

Sorry to have misjudged your intentions, but I was hinting towards the other statistics because they show that many of the women who have abortions became pregnant despite the use of contraceptives (Link). While I agree with you that hiding behind the banner of rape and incest is dangerous, I think it is as dangerous to assume that all the other women "needing" abortions are stupid or what have you. There are very valid reasons not to have a baby in the same way as there are very valid reasons to have babies.

I do agree with you that it is important to "champion the cause with integrety" because if we just highlight those cases in which even some pro-lifers consider abortion a viable option, then we end up denying the true extent of the issue.
