I didn't lower my expectations for a year. In 1995 I was earning £75k a year - say $150k - I had benefits and a Mercedes etc and I flew Concorde and didn't want to go and be a book keeper

When the year was up I started temping and slowly got back to a reasonable job at half the salary or less

Applying for Finance Director jobs when you are working in McDonald's is strategically a bad idea

I know that in the right wing US, you are supposed to prostitute yourself when you don't have a job and the rightos sell that as being honorable. It isn't in the rest of the world where I was living.

I reckon we know what was said and translating it from plain to plain it says if you are unemployed, blame yourself. Thatcher's minister Norman Tebbit said the same thing - get on your bike and look for a job - he is still hated for it. 'On your bike' is now a term of abuse you can hear any day in England - 30 years later

Now shall we continue the wriggle room and whether the commas and italics are correct, or agree the sentiment and decide whether he should be raked over the coals for it ?

I think its a cultural thing

In the US you are are expected to clean bus station toilets with a toothbrush if you are unemployed and you can get a job when you are older

In the UK, if you are doing a menial job, people think the worse of you - they want someone who is and remains at a high level

I was 47 when I became unemployed. Jobs in my field required someone who was 27, with a top 8 firm background. Fluent in 3 European languages, International experience (actually working abroad), and a Masters degree in addition to a full Professional qualification

The agency I used, and had used for 20 years, told me that at 47, I would be very fortunate if I ever worked again. That hurt. Its not the same in the US.

That's a bad situation.

If someone had come along and told me it was my fault, it could have finished me off. My girlfriend dumped me for a guy who had a good job with a nice car. Its a bad time but I had it easy as I had few commitments. Even so, slapping someone when they are down is horrible

This Caine guy is actually very intelligent but he has a slack mouth and its his Achilles heel. That plus his basic politics will kill him off because the Republicans see a black guy - he is useful for what that can do for them - but given their core supporters, it isn't much. They are using him and they haven't that much use for him.

He is for the door. If Gingrich is out and Sarah is out, then this guy is. VP for the black vote ? - come on they ain't that stoopid - really they aren't.

They know all about uncle toms leading them on and selling them out and they will spot this guy at a mile

The women saw through the Sarah ploy too - so it doesn't work
