If the goverment wasn't guarantying these loans the banks would make sure there was a reasonable expectation of employment before handing out the money.

Majors like "Womens Studies" and "Golf Management" would disappear over night.

Good point. Or, tuition for those programs would come down to reasonable levels (i.e. market supported levels). And we'd have fewer students going to college as well, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if sufficient voc-ed alternatives were available.

 Bring back metal shop! Bring back woodshop! Learn a trade, and you will never go hungry! Having a trade paid my way through college.

I am not sure who decided that every student should go to college and eliminated all of these trade courses. Seems like No Child Left Behind had a great deal to do with it, as schools started focusing on getting students to pass those courses that were tested. I also remember it becoming a requirement to have four years Math/English/Foreign Language so all these kids were being pushed into that track. Here they are now, with no job after college.

The new thing is for schools to be 21st Century Learners...

Wonder what it will be next year

No, it started way before that. I went to college in the mid 90s and even then there were lots of departments full of undergrads borrowing a ton of money and getting useless educations.

Well, sure, that is always the case. I had to borrow money to go to college, because my parents weren't paying for all of it with five children, and I went to college before you. However, it wasn't nearly so difficult to get a job at that time. Hey, I was an art major! I managed ok.

What I was talking about was how the curriculum has changed in high school, to emphasize subjects that would prepare you for college, rather than a trade, thus more people were encouraged to go to college.

I'm not sure about tuition at Michigan back when I went to school, but at Michigan State from the year I started it was $41.00 per credit and now it is $406.75. I imagine it was slightly higher at Michigan, but probably proportional. Wages haven't gone up comparatively to this in the same amount of time. It wasn't so hard to pay for loans at that time. Probably much harder now.

The schools tell you, "Don't worry, we can cut that in about half with grants." Dayum! Take away the grants, and the school just may have to lower the tuition to get full enrollment. However, finding enough students doesn't seem to be a problem for the California Universities. I wonder where that woman found a decent four year college for only $40,000.
