No need to! A nice pair of trousers and a button down shirt sound absolutely fine. He may be more comfortable in them than a suit, anyway.

As I remember most people wore semi-casual clothes. I remember wearing jeans and a tank top (well, it was summer!) and not looking out of place.

So, what are people wearing to the interview? Allan was planning on a nice pair of trousers and a sweater or button down shirt...but should be wearing a suit instead?

I summarize it like this: What would he wear to meet your parents for the first time? ;)

Don't ever do anything you're not willing to explain the paramedics.

Most of the world dressed better than the typical relaxed American (blue jeans and a t-shirt with a saying on it). I'd even say yes to the kilt. You want to show respect for the staff and have then see you as a person with honor and integrity. They will remember you if you wear a coat and tie. Maybe it is overkill, but what have you got to lose? Being remembered by the staff in a good way can't harm you and just maybe they will work your application first. Be someone they'd want to send to America.

Wear some clothes. That's a good start.

All kidding aside, it doesn't make much of a difference what you wear, as your face time is really just that - FACE time. More importantly, don't get coffee at the Starbucks near the Embassy - the caffeine buzz makes you look ridiculously nervous

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

At the time I had my AoS interview, I came directly from work as a sign twirler at Kentucky Fried Chicken and wore my chicken costume. I took the chicken head off when entering the building and straightened my hair and it all went pretty well.

Now that is something that would be remembered by the staff, not the guy in the business suit.

David wore jeans and a sweater. You interview at a booth which reminds me of the RMV. They really only see you from the chest up anyway.

That is hilarious!
