You can't say he made major contributions to the computing world and, in the same breath, bash apple products. The vast majority of his contributions initially took the form of Apple products. You are ridiculous, as I said. And please, for the amusement of myself and others in this thread, let it be known how and why you are qualified to discuss this.

Sure you can.... Just because someone was a technological genius, doesn't mean the finished product that's been put out for the past decade or so hasn't been a rip-off. We're not talking about early contributions here at all, we're talking about the computers Apple has put out in the last 15 years. They're severely overpriced and anyone who's ever built a PC themselves knows this.

My qualifications aren't your concern, and frankly none of your business. Let me give you a little bit to play with though to cool your jets. I am ACMT, ACTC, & ACSA certified on the 'Apple' side of things.

I thought Xerox developed the graphic user interface first.

First? Yes. I didn't claim jobs had a hand in developing the first ui.

I wonder how many more posts it would take me to cause you to completely reverse your original statement. I guess I shouldn't expect much from someone who thinks certifications still mean something.

You can't get me to reverse my original statement. It's the truth that only someone blinded by Apple fanboyism cannot see. Apple PCs are a complete rip-off for home computers, plain and simple.

I don't think certifications means jack really myself these days, but I was giving you some food since you asked for it.

First? Yes. I didn't claim jobs had a hand in developing the first ui.

Mouse. Graphical user interface / bitmapped graphics. Ethernet. Laser printer. Smalltalk / Object oriented programming.

All invented at XEROX PARC.

All popularized and commercialized by Apple.

xerox-alto.jpg

The revolutionary Xerox Alto computer was introduced internally at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in 1973. This was the first manufactured machine to use a mouse, and the Ethernet protocol was established to network the machines within Xerox. The main processing unit, the size of a small refrigerator, was designed to sit under a desk or table, while the display, mouse, and keyboard sat on the tabletop. The display was shaped like a piece of letter-sized paper and in conjunction with the mouse employed a graphical user interface (GUI). This was perhaps the most farsighted feature of the machine, as it took another 20 years for GUI's to become standard on desktop computers.

Steve Jobs of Apple Computer toured the Xerox PARC facilities in 1979 and immediately recognized the utility of the GUI on the Alto. The design of Apple's Lisa computer, already under development, was changed to be GUI-based. Xerox also developed a GUI machine called the Star for the mass market, but both the Lisa and Star were flops due to their high price tags. It wasn't until the Macintosh was released in 1984 that the price point for mass-market appeal in a GUI machine was achieved.

Well, the first UI was invented by Xerox, no disagreement there, but there are quite a few distinct differences between Xerox's first UI and Apple's extension of this UI. For example, Apple implemented drag & drop, which was not present in Xerox's UI. Apple did indeed pioneer the modern UI, both for desktops and mobile devices. You can see this in more detail in Hertzfeld's "Revolution in the Valley". He goes into great detail regarding the differences between the two company's UIs, among other things.

If you chose to buy it of your own free will how is it a ripoff? Evidently by your definition people love getting ripped off as Apple is the most profitable tech company in existence. You and I may not like the company, but the majority thinks otherwise. And I'd like you to show me an ultra book that is better priced and has better specs than the MBA. Sandy Bridge processors, first widespread use of ssd, etc. You can't. Samsung has recently learned that, as has every competing tablet manufacturer. And no, I don't own any Apple products. I give credit where it is due.

So, Apple makes a product, people buy said product and develop a loyalty to the brand, Apple sets their price and people willingly pay it....and that makes Jobs a con artist/crook? Yeah whatever.

The only Apple product I own, or have ever owned, is an iPod I purchased about 5 years ago. I use an Android phone, and Windows/Linux based PCs. I'm not a fanboy, I simply am able to appreciate Jobs' contribution to the industry.

I should expand on what I said, actually. I'd say certifications are relevant in some areas of IT, but certainly not in the software development circle. On the hardware side (which I am infinitely less knowledgeable) as well as the IS side, some of them do seem to be useful/relevant according to recruiters.

How long will Apple stay on top now?

Depends on Cook's abilities as well as Apple's customer base's willingness to accept him.
