Ok so my husband has his medical exam on Oct. 31 at medisys and then we have the interview on the 4th of Nov. What all do we need to bring to the interview?

Here's what we have ready:

Husband Birth Certificate (original & translated version)

Marriage Certificate

I-864 Forms & Supporting Evidence (one for myself and also one from our co-sponsor)

Police Certificate (original)

Photographs

Passports

Is there anything we are missing? Should we bring any bank statements and/or proof of where we intend to live in the states? Do we need to bring copies of everything too?

Also any advise on a nice, fairly cheap hotel to stay at since we will be staying there for a week?

He should bring at least one photocopy of everything as Montreal keeps it as part of his file which later goes into a big brown folder that his will receive with his visa that he submit at POE. Do this for the birth certificate translation too as they kept a copy of my translation and I wanted to have the original handy in the future so I don't have to go through the trouble of re-doing it in the USA.

The only thing they don't keep a copy of is the police certificate as a copy is not acceptable. At my interview, she kept a copy of my birth certificate, a copy of the birth certificate translation, the affidavit of support (I-134, since I'm a K1) and copies of its supporting evidence. It looks like he has the most important stuff ready but its a little barebones. He needs to bring the appointment letter too, don't forget that!

Since I went the K1 route I'm not completely familiar with the process for IR1/CR1 but I also had to bring a receipt for the $350 MRV fee that I paid online. I also brought evidence of our relationship (which they didn't ask to see), copies of everything I sent in Packet 3, copies of the I-129F, and Pkt3 & Pkt4. Although many people go through their interview only submitting the minimum you never know what they're going to ask for and its better to be safe than sorry.

Edit: Oh yeah don't forget the DS 230! I forgot to mention that. It'd also be prudent for him to bring photocopies of the biographic info page on his passport. Really, I brought everything I could think of (that wasn't difficult to procure) in a big accordion folder. They didn't ask for everything, sure, but I was prepared and it was worth the effort.

I just went through the whole interview process last Wednesday,September 28th (and received my visa packet on Monday October 3rd here n Kitchener). It seems that what you have listed is what you bring. Just as a reminder, DO NOT forget to bring your medical results. Also remember to bring as little else with you as possible and do not bring any electronic devices (cell phones, mp3 players, remote control for cars, etc.) and don't bring any huge bags. If you did your visa application online (ie. you completed the DS260 form) you will still have to do the DS230 form. I found this out the hard way even though the State Department website said don't do the 230 if you have done the 260. Bank statements shouldn't be necessary as long as your I-864 form is complete with copies of previous income tax.

As for a cheap place to stay, I myself stayed at a hostel (HI-Montreal on Rue Mackay). I was in a dorm, but they do have private rooms available. The cost for my dorm for 7 nights was about $250 taxes included. The hostel is only about a 20 minute walk from both Medisys and the US Consulate. (I'm assuming you are going to Montreal). And it's not far from other amenities like restaurants, bars, grocery store, gas station, banks. It's a good place: it's clean, the staff are super friendly and very helpful and it's relatively inexpensive. It's costs $5 more a night if you're not a member of Hosteling International. Other than that, I'm not sure of other cheap places.

Hope this helps and all the best with the medical/interview! :)

I filed in September and I am in the intial review stage but looking ahead. I do not have a passport , only a nexus card. Will that matter?

Only if you want your visa!!! It takes up a WHOLE page in your Cdn Passport!! So yes most def you need a passport

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yes, you need a passport for your Visa and your I-94 that you receive at your POE.

Thanks. I read your review and i was wondering since you did the electronic processing if you had to bring copies of all the papers?
