Am I wasting time with the I-131?

Just planning ahead for after we are married.

I know to file the AOS and EAD, but we have no travel plans at all outside the US. I thought it'd be nice to have the ability to travel in case there is an emergency back in the old country, especially with adult children there. Should I just wait for the GC? Can I fill out the I-131 with no specific dates but ask for one just in case?

K-1 Journey

03-03-2011 - Mailed I-129F application.

03-06-2011 - Packet received in Texas.

03-23-2011 - NOA1 received in mail, dated 03-09-2011.

05-31-2011 - RFE requested. They want better passport pictures of me.

06-06-2011 - Additional passport pics sent.

06-08-2011 - Evidence received and acknowledged. Whew!

06-16-2011 - NOA2 received!

07-20-2011 - Packet 3 Received!

08-01-2011 - Packet 3 returned to Embassy.

08-22-2011 - Packet 4 Received!

09-19-2011 - Interview...APPROVED!

09-23-2011 - Visa in Hand

09-29-2011 - POE LAX

11-11-2011 - Wedding at 11:11pm GMT time.

AOS Journey

12-02-2011 - Mailed in AOS/EAD/AP paperwork.

12-05-2011 - Delivery confirmation per USPS.

12-27-2011 - (3) NOA I-797C received, dated 12-20-2011. Biometrics appt set.

01-10-2012 - Biometrics.

01-20-2012 - Notified of interview appointment for 2-21-2012.

01-31-2012 - EAD and AP approved.

02-08-2012 - EAD/AP card received.

02-21-2012 - AOS interview approved. EAD/AP card confiscated.

03-01-2012 - Green Card in hand!!!

364 days total time!

AP is routinely approved in connection to AOS, so you do not need to provide any specific reason or information on planned trips or travel dates to get it. It also doesn't cost extra, so personally I think it is always a good idea to apply for it, just in case there is an emergency or something unexpected happens and you need to be able to leave the US while your AOS is pending. If there's no reason to travel, you don't need to use it - but there's definitely no harm in getting it, just in case.

03/21/2011 - Day 18 - Biometrics letter received, biometrics scheduled for 04/14/2011

03/31/2011 - Day 28 - Successful walk-in biometrics done

05/12/2011 - Day 70 - EAD Arrived, issued on 05/02

06/14/2011 - Day 103 - E-mail notice: Interview letter mailed, interview scheduled for July 20th

07/20/2011 - Day 139 - Interview at Federal Plaza USCIS location

07/22/2011 - Day 141 - E-mail approval notice received (Card production)

07/27/2011 - Day 146 - 2nd Card Production Email received

07/28/2011 - Day 147 - Post-Decision Activity Email from USCIS

08/04/2011 - Day 154 - Husband returns home from abroad; Welcome Letter and GC have arrived in the mail

("Resident since" date on the GC is 07/20/2011

I'm the same, no plans to leave but want/need it for emergencies, they happen and I need to be able to get back to England, but thats the only reason I want it, we've no holiday plans or anything like that. It takes no time at all to fill in the i-131 so you might aswel, and it doesn't cost anything if you file at the same time as filing AOS or while its pending. But it literally takes no time at all to get the papers and evidence together so I would strongly recommend just sending it with the AOS.

Yes you can, where it ask for dates just put NONE - I attached a letter saying I have no intention of leaving I'd just like it for emergencies to put my mind and my families mind at ease.

Definitely do it. If you'd been around as long as I have, you'd know the sad tales of people who also had no plans to visit so didn't apply. Then grandma died. Or mum got dignosed with cancer. Or best friend decided to marry in 3 weeks.
