It's Oct, 2011...My income from 2000-2008 was more than adequate for approval. However, in 2008, I went back to school to become a doctor. As a matter of fact...in the Philippines where I met my fiance 4 yrs ago. I'm at the end of school and would like to bring her home to the US now. However, I don't have an adequate income meeting the minimum requirements over the past 4 years. However, my income potential as a physician in the US should count for something, right? Or, even with my previous position as and ICU Nurse and US Army Officer Reservist should be adequate right? I'm NOT SO SURE...so, question is....K-1 or I-130 ? I've heard that the US Embassy in Manila doesn't accept co-sponsorships...true or myth?? HELP...I start my internship in the US this March. Thanks

By law, joint sponsors are allowed when an immigrant visa is being sought. A CR-1 visa is an immigrant visa; if you go on that path, the Embassy in Manila would follow the law and you would be able to have a joint sponsor.

You must to get a co-sponsor. Potential income is never accounted for. Everyone can say I potentially could make 200K, however not everyone is making money like that.

Co/joint sponsors aren't accepted in K1 visas but are entertained in CR-1 visas. Marry your fiance here in the Philippines, then file I-130 once you get back to US. That's what my hubby and I did :) We also opt having a joint sponsor in our case coz hubby wasn't able to meet the minimum requirement needed to support me, the intending immigrant based on his 2010 IRS and W2s :) Our case is currently being reviewed in NVC.

The I130/CR1 option with a co-sponsor would give you the best chance at an approval (And reduce overall cost)... And since you are living

in the Philippinesyou are eligible for DCF (Direct Consul Filing)... This is normally a much quicker approval.

Good Luck,

Co-sponsors on a K-1 are allowed by the USEM on a case-by-case basis. I've personally read on VJ about a couple of

people who were in the same situation as you are. Both were students and have just graduated. They got immediate

relatives to co-sponsor them. Both got approved. It is really up to you to choose which path is best. Good luck!

Income potential is not going to count for much because it cannot be documented.

If you want surety that a joint sponsor will be accepted then pursuing a spousal visa (CR1) would be best as it uses the I-864 affidavit of support rather than the I-134 (K visa).
