You cannot whole heartedly recite the Pledge of Allegiance if your allegiance is divided. It's nothing personal, it's a matter of fact.

If you think that would be something new to me, you obviously don't know anything about the requirements and ceremony for citizenship. Don't they teach you anything after you take your morning pledge ?

I am sure this guy we just killed and Major Hassan knew the pledge very well and faced the flag every morning at school - they were born citizens - the kind you like

They would fit your requirements for a good citizen very well which just shows your requirements are wonky

The fact is that duals have been through enormous checks with many photos/ blood samples / physical and mental examinations / financial checks /Police records and so on ad infinitum and over very many years and had their tax returns checked etc etc etc

Gimme a good dual as a neighbor any time compared to the home grown, pledged up, baseball fan terrorists like this guy we just killed

Trouble with nativists is they don't think it through..

To complicate matters, I don't believe in dual citizenship. There's always one which trumps the other.

It's not a question of what you "believe" in. Your beliefs are fine for Jesus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.

As to citizenship, why don't we leave it to the Law, shall we?

The concept of dual nationality means that a person is a citizen of two countries at the same time. Each country has its own citizenship laws based on its own policy.Persons may have dual nationality by automatic operation of different laws rather than by choice. For example, a child born in a foreign country to U.S. citizen parents may be both a U.S. citizen and a citizen of the country of birth.

A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship. However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship.

I happen to have citizenship in 3 countries. My children are citizens of four.

I look at the US population and I think to myself that if these guys all paid their taxes and didn't do crime and didn't do terrorism and drugs and reported suspicious dealings and played by the rules, what a much better country it would be. In other words I am a damned valuable citizen to this country whether I am a dual or not. I treasure my UK passport because whatever happens to my health and finances, if the US was going to leave me to die in the gutter (they do that) then the UK would take me in and fix me up for free.

The nativists who are anti-dual deserve to be surrounded by home grown Major Hassans and Al -Mularkies and Timothy McVeighs - then they would dream of living next door to me and other duals.

But no - they want duals to pay tax and be available for the army draft and to spend their lives as second class citizens and looked down on by others depending on where the other was ejected from their mother's body even if the natural is on the sex offenders register and is behind with taxes and has criminal convictions for domestic violence and spent 4 years in Canada hiding from the Vietnam draft or has spent time in an al queda training camp in Afghanistan etc etc etc

No way - I am as good as any natural and better than most - so there - even if I hate baseball

I was born with dual citizenship, and acquired two more through marriage. My kids were born with three.

So if you and Scandal hooked up and made a baby, he could have 7 right out of the gate.

Imagine that

He'd have the Palistinian ties and Jewish ties, He'd be a natural leader. I can see it now!!

He could be the one to bring peace to the Middle east

You guys owe it to your countries to give it a try. I have a good feel about this.

I feel like an uncle already.. He could call me Ammu Dan.

I'll make the hummus for the baby shower. Justin can handle the invites.

I'll loan him my video camera so he can film the blessed event.

I'm giddy as a school girl!!!!! why didn't someone think of this before??

I've got the name all picked out!!! "Solomon ibn Scandal Al Filisteenee"

I am not voting for him.

That's a bit premature - life is full of distasteful choices and every day we chose the lesser of two evils.

Until we see what kind of death-squad, fascist, anti-education, grisly, ignorant, swaggering, big-belted, bow-legged, pigeon chested Texan torturer the right wing put up, we cant rule Mr O out entirely

I must have been picturing Perry when I described that alternative

LOL so testy. My beliefs are fine for law too...apparently for everyone else too, or else this forum wouldn't exist ;)

But that's besides the point. If we're talking particulars, this is the exact text:

(eta link: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=facd6db8d7e37210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=dd7ffe9dd4aa3210VgnVCM100000b92ca60aRCRD )

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.

As a matter of law, every person who holds dual citizenship is technically lying when they make this pledge. Whether it's enforced or not is a different matter. "I renounce all allegiance and fidelity." That's a pretty heavy statement. That doesn't say 'some' or doesn't say 'I'll share allegiance with'...it says "I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure' (verbose for clarity? dunno)

I am not against LPRs, and I see a reason why many become dual citizens. However, the notion of dual allegiance is truly impossible. There is always one which holds the TRUE loyalty. People don't need to get all twisted if my view on this is offensive...it's a very matter of fact and clear conflict of interest.

Anyway, that's great that you hold x amount of citizenships...but I doubt you can hold true loyalty and fidelity to all.

What a load of bunkum (bunkum is a form of Texan cowboy lodging)

What has holding a passport got to do with loyalty and allegiance ? This terrorist we just killed held a US passport like you and me - what did that prove ? So did Timothy McVeigh (a veteran). So did Major Hassan (serving soldier). Why do you prefer al-malarky and hassan and timothy McVeigh to me ?

What oath did I ever make to the UK ?

All I said when I became a British Citizen was "damn it was dark in there". Actually I thought it rather than said it

Just what allegiance do you think holding a foreign passport implies ? Mine gets me through immigration at Leeds and all over the EC quickly and they will care for me if I get sick and cant pay without losing my house. That's about the whole of the deal

The area where I lived in England is now 90% Pakistani Moslem and they hate me and my tribe - so what makes you think I want to fight to protect them ? They have their own nuclear weapons.

I can see you're clearly annoyed...and it's not about me having a preference. We've had this conversation before, so you should be familiar with where I stand. Dual nationals who keep their previous nationalities are lying when saying that oath. It's really that simple.

IMO, this is why naturalized citizens cannot run for POTUS. There's always a question of loyalty.

I brought up the question of dual nationality in response to what Rob said. That this cleric was convicted in Yemen. Well, even though he's a citizen in Yemen, that means nothing to US due process.

As far as Tim Mc Veigh and the like, it's not about cleansing the US pool. We're dealt who we have...some will be crazy, some will be maniacs, some will be awesome...and to bring it back to the matter at hand, Tim McVeigh got his due process. We shouldn't be celebrating this man not getting his.

I know someone who was born here but grew up abroad - technically he can run for Potus. The "native born" requirement is kind of silly - there has to be more than an accident of birth on US soil.
