Hi Everyone,

I'm new to VJ and love the vast amount of resources on the site to assist with the immigration process.

I've been thinking about my HECS debt lately and was wondering if any other members became LPR's or Citizens with an outstanding HECS amount?

I'm planning on making voluntary repayments but I do understand that because I will no longer be an Australian tax resident then I will never earn above the compulsory repayment threshold again from the ATO's prespective.

Have any other VJ members had to deal with this situation?

Cheers

Yeah I still have a HECS debt. I don't pay anything towards it (called HELP now). While I would like to "give back" I just don't earn enough. It's never been an issue at any stage.

That is true and the debt will mount by about 3% interest ...

We met, we fell in love, we married, we live as one! And that's the way love goes...:)

I left with about $300 owing on a HElP debt. I lodged a tax return this year and made the voluntary repayment but it was never an issue. I chose to lodge so I could repay the balance because it was so small otherwise I probably would have left it as well.

OUR JOURNEY SO FAR: (dd/mm/yyyy)

18/09/09 - CR1 NOA1

16/07/10 - POE LAX (256 days NOA1 to interview)

27/09/10 - Aussie/American bun in the oven due May 10, 2011

06/01/11 - Submitted change of address online to USCIS. Mailed I-865 for sponsor. Neverending!

05/05/11 - Bouncing baby boy arrives

10/07/12 - Sent I-751

13/07/12 - I-751 NOA1
