My wife had her interview at the US Embassy in El Salvador in early September. She left with the impression that she was approved but just had to do one thing--provide a new copy of her "solvenia" (police certificate)--and she would receive her passport back with the visa within 2 weeks.

Well, 3 weeks came and went and I contacted the embassy and was told that she "was found ineligible to receive a visa under Section 221g of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), pending further documentary evidence in her case" and that "In order to overcome this ineligibility, the Embassy requested the applicant's police record" and "The case is being reviewed by a consular officer at this time."

She had been told apologetically by the consular officer that sending in another copy of her "solvencia" was just a "formality". "Ineligible" doesn't sound like a formality (!!!) . . . what's up with that??? Is that just embassy jargon? I mean, I Googled "Section 221g" and it's pretty scary--it's all about terrorism, assassinations, etc.

If you have any perspective on this, your thoughts would be appreciated . . . Thanks!

Thanks for your note. She actually went straight from the interview to get the police certificate and it was delivered the next day. The delivery company confirmed this for me. However, your note made me go back and reread the embassy's correspondence more carefully and I realized that they confirmed receipt as well, but listed a date 10 days later! I don't know if that means that it got delivered and sat in a pile of mail for 10 days . . . who knows?
