I'm in the process of purchasing an individual (family) health insurance plan for myself and my wife and one of the questions asks if either of us has "resided in the U.S. for less than 6 months." She's been here for over 9 months but she's still not an LPR because USCIS is taking it's sweet time in getting around to processing her AOS...

Does anyone know what is considered "resided in the U.S." for health insurance purposes? I know she's not a U.S. resident for immigration purposes yet (Thanks a lot, USCIS!:ranting:) but since she has resided here in the U.S. for over 9 months, she certainly meets the English language definition of a U.S. resident.

When I looked into this, I was told that it meant 6 months physical presence. Ask your agent or customer service agent to be certain.

I was told by my work to add him as my husband to my insurance as soon as we married as I have just gone back to full time I will be eligible for insurance in October (3rd months of full-time) instead of waiting until the 1st of January and adding him then - so guess we may have to plan on marrying prior to 1st Jan. Guess we will see.

Yes, for an employee group health plan, there is usually no such waiting period. If as we did, you are shopping for self-paid health insurance, you will run into many nasty little insurance secrets such as waiting periods, health screenings and pre-existing condition exclusions.blink.gif
